New iMac, did I mess up?

Last night I was checking out G5 iMacs on ebay, found a nice deal (it had good specs and a lot of software). I was about two seconds from hitting buy it now, when I chickened out and started looking around the web. Anyway at B&H Photo I found the new iMac core 2 duo (stock) for the same price as the auction and I got it, on a whim (horrors).

As you can see in my signature this is an upgrade from one of the first mini's. It has served me well but isn't quite keeping up anymore. I will be giving it to my mother, along with my display and isight. She is a very light user and the mini will be a great upgrade from her 7 year old HP desktop and crt!

So okay, what worries me is first off buying not from apple! I don't know what I was thinking. Was this really stupid? I did get applecare, but I just fear that if something goes wrong apple is going to tell me to go to B&H (and I know they aren't going to help me). ??

I'm also nervous about buying it stock. But even as stock, I should see a nice boost from my 1.42ghz mini right? And I think I can always upgrade the ram later right? I'm not a gamer, I just do some photo editing, web, email, tv (I have the TVMax), etc. My goals with the iMac are less beach balls, a superdrive, compatibility with leopard and at the version following that, the ability to handle more multitasking, and just snappier response than I am currently getting.

Apple will do repairs. Don't worry about not buying from Apple. Every Mac sold in stores in this country is bought from someone other than Apple - only resellers here and there's no problems. Put your mind at ease now, no stupidity has occurred. Now, buying a G5 iMac for the same price as a Core 2 Duo iMac would've been stupid - you made the right choice.

Grab a 1GB stick of RAM and take your new iMac to 2GB - it'll fly.

Wow. Alot of worry for nothing. It's a good buy, and don't look back. The only thing you would have to feel bad about is if you had a corporate or educational discount which you didn't take advantage of. But comparing a 64-bit iMac to a G5, you are set for a while with the Core 2 Duo. Plus you'll be able to take better advantage of Leopard with the 64-bit architecture.

Don't worry about stock configuration either. It's much easier to upgrade RAM with these compared with the mini's. So just see how this one suits you for now, and upgrade later if needed.

The G5 was also 64 bit. There's going to be very little in the way of applications taking advantage of the 64 bit architecture - it only lets them access gob loads of RAM, if a program doesn't require much RAM it won't be any faster.

The dual-core, much faster nature of the Core 2 Duo will make more difference than 64 bit ever will considering both processors have that ability.

I've spent thousands of dollars at B&H on photography and video equipment. They're a good company and I have no complaints. Apple will honor your warranty regardless of where you bought the computer from.
