Glossyness aside, how does the quality of the imac display compare to the acd's ? thanks

It's hard to put that aside.

For color matching for photographs, there is no comparison.

For the home user who primarily uses the machine to write, surf, watch movies and listen to music, the iMac screen is just fine (if the reflections don't bother you).

ok thanks, i'd be using it for print & web design, but the lighting in the office would suit that ok.

Great way to sum it up.
It's very true for Regular users of the iMac (like me) See nothing wrong with the Display. But since your doing Photo work, I suggest get the ACD, or get the iMac, but hook it up to an external display, so you can keep one screen for WebCode, and the other side for Photoshop, Fireworks, etc.
