New iMac Feature Set Discussion - no touchscreens!

So, with the iMac release looking to be a few weeks away, what will be in the new iMacs? I can tell that they won't be touchscreen - that's just going too far for not a full month since the iPhone.

Processor: Probably one of the new chips announced today (https://www.macrumors.com/2007/07/16/intel-core-2-extreme-2-6-ghz-x7800-announced/) or one of the ones for the 22nd price drop. Depends on how much heat the design can take.
Screen: NOT TOUCHSCREEN - Probably 20" and 24", with maybe a third option that's bigger (10% 30", 5% 27") or the 17" won't be dropped (15%). LED backlighting (70%), I'm betting - the lower power consumption = less heat = more power.
Keyboard and Mouse: Might be the same, might be a redesign. I'm giving 60% to new keyboard, and 15% to new mice.
Material: White plastic (40%), White or Black (20%), ALU (30%), color-changing clear plastic (5%), something totally cool and different (5% - wood, soap bubble, none, adamantium, cheese, particle shielding, etc.).
OS: Tiger (99% - 35% says coupon for Leopard), Leopard (1%).
RAM: 4GB max (70%), either 512mb (35%) or 1GB (65%) baseline. 2GB minimum on larger models is 10%. 2 slots are 80%, 4 slots 20%.
HDD: 60% 250GB smallest available, 40% on 160GB. 35% on 750 GB as BTO on 20". 5% for 2 drives; 5% with flash storage attatched to speed read/write times.
GPU: Dunno, but 15% on user-replacability. 1% on integrated.
Optical drive: Blu-ray at 15%.

RAM: min. 512 - max. 2 gb
HDD: Same as now: min. 160 gb - max. 250 gb
Optical drive: Every model has a Superdrive but Blu-Ray is available - for a price

No, the only Apple products with LED backlights are the MacBook Pros and iPods, so there are no iMacs with LED backlights.

yeah, I think I saw some from samsung a while back, but I'm not sure they're in mass production yet. Surely we'd see an 'Apple makes 24" LED order' rumors like we did with the 15" MBP displays!

Samsung has a 24" LCD LED that is WUXGA (1920x1200) that would be perfect for the high-end iMac, but that panel is likely to command quite a premium for the first year or so. If a regular 24" display is $600, I would expect this one to come closer to $1000 (or more perhaps), which would make the iMac one expensive computer.

Now a 24" Cinema Display that you could use for a few computer systems (and not just the iMac) over the years would be clearly worthwhile.

In light of todays announcement here is what im going for

20 " model
C2D 2.2 upgradable to 2.4GHZ
2GB Ram upgradable to 4GB (dont go giving me that crap but its a consumer model will be 1GB bla bla, it will be hitting market round about £999 mark probs, you can get dell towers with 2GB Ram for less than £500)
250GB HDD, upgradable to 500GB
NVidia GeForce 8600m GT 128mb vram upgradable to 256

24" model
C2D 2.4 upgradable (at a price!!!) to 2.6ghz
2GB Ram upgradable to 4GB
320GB HDD upgradable to 750GB
NVidia GeForce 8600m GT 256mb vram stock option. Either same card with 320mb vram or nvidia 8700m gt with 320-512mb vram.

All models come with BT, 802.11n and superdrives, no blue ray just yet

also think displays could be hdcp compatable and have the option of glossy or matte

I've heard a lot of talk about the release of the new iMacs concerning leopard coupons and free iPod promo deals. Well here's my two cents. The iPod promo gives you $200 off on a new mac purchase for an iPod. iLife is rumored to have recently gone golden master, iLife typically costs $80 for the new version, unless of course it comes on your new mac. Leopard will cost $130. The cost of iLife and Leopard put together come very close to that $200.

So here's my theory. The iMac will be released before the iPod promo ends. People will have the option to either select that promo, or get a coupon for leopard and iLife. When the iPod promo ends then perhaps iLife will come out around that time and new mac computers will come with the new iLife version, of course, and they will come with a coupon for leopard since it will be released very soon at that point, as long as everything goes as planned.

RAM 512? Lets go back to the 80's!

I think RAM will be the same as the new MBP's: 2GB/4GB

I think it will have the 2.4 ( or 2.2) processor and for extra money the 2.6.

Graphics card i dunno

Definately no LED, maybe HD?

OS: Tiger and maybe, just maybe Leopard

HDD is probably going to be increased

That is a great idea. If thye where to do this it would be a great way to get rid of old ipod stock and push sales of the new iMac.

I would defiantly go for the ilife and leopard promotion, then later when the new ipods are release, get one of those, instead of one of the current models that are involved with the promotion.

my expectations if Aug 7 is true...

• 20" and 24" displays
• Faster dual-core CPU, with quad core option.
• 8000 series NV GPU
• Bluray option
• 2GB RAM standard, upgradable to 4GB
• Higher clocks for the FSB and RAM
• Aluminum enclosure (with Mac Pro finish, and perforation on the back panel for ventilation.)
• Smaller chin.
• New keyboard that borrows heavily from the iPhone.
• Possibly a new mouse, with capacitance sensor for scrolling, instead of the problematic ball.
• Tiger installed, with coupon for free upgrade to Leopard and iLife07.

Okay as far back as I can remember the only time that a new technology was in the iMac first was USB, I dont think we will see Blue-Ray in the iMac until it is a BTO option for the Mac Pro, Im not saying that it wont happen at the same time but the Mac Pro should have Blue-Ray first.

Given that the current imac is based on laptop components but has limited cooling, perhaps it would be to much to hope that it will use desktop components but if so...
I think it will be as follows:

Quad core CPU starting at 2.4 Ghz
Intel wants to make all its non mobile CPU's to have 1333MHz FSB
2-8GB RAM
as I am not allowed to mention TS then 2 hard drives would be nice

If as rumored it has an aluminium case I dont think it will resemble the current cinema displays but both the Imac and Cinema displays would re designed this would then have better heat dissipation to allow the use of desktop components and graphics as below

Nvidia 8800 graphics remember the current Imac has better graphics than the previous MBP the current having 8600M graphics, the only sticking point to the graphics would be the form factor of the graphics card.

The achilles heel of the Mac Pro is graphics power but with the above 8800gtx running in SLI...


Also an Imac with TS and in built DVB Tuner could be positioned as a home media centre with the possibility to put these in more rooms.
