Just bought a 24" imac with 1 gig of ram, and have noticed that it is kinda slow, especially compared to my MBP with two gigs of ram.

It seems to be getting hung up on some applications, especially when I have multiple apps open (i.e. safari, iphoto, itunes, etc..)

Is this due to only having 1 gig of ram?

maybe.

take a gig of ram out of your MBP and put it in your iMac and find out.

with 1gb of ram, my iMac was faster in Tiger than Leopard,

with 3gig its pretty fast, i would'nt say it flys..

i dunno what 4gb would do, perhaps an extra 5% speed?

If you're using the full 3GB (having 10 apps open, working) then the 4GB could give you ~10%-100% more performance.
If you're not using the full 3GB, it won't give you ANY additional performance.

It just depends on who you are, and how you work. Some people wouldn't see an ounce of speed improvement from 1GB to 4GB.

On my G5, I saw a huge gain from 5gb to 8gb, so I can only imagine how amazing 3-4gb would be.

Yes, this is due to the low RAM.
More RAM will dramatically improve responsiveness with multiple apps open.

4GB will all but eliminate the RAM as a factor in the computing efficiency of your iMac, even with memory intensive apps running.
Get it while it's still cheap.
BTW, using matched density modules will double the bandwidth of the memory controller, compared to using a single module, or two modules of different density.
Brandname of the RAM is not a factor.
This should improve the memory performance of your iMac by about 20%.

So what exactly does that mean in terms of what I order?
