Hey everyone.
Got my iMac back in the end of February and it's been working flawlessly.

About a month ago though, my connection started randomly dropping after periods of moderate internet-use. Say maybe, 20-30mins of browsing.
It usually starts working fine after I shut the computer off for a while and try again.
I thought maybe it was the ethernet cable, so I got another one, but with the same result. So it got me thinking, maybe it is my ISP. Called Verizon up and they said everything looked good on their end and that my IP was showing up fine. They reset my connection, but with no result. The gentleman on the phone suggested it maybe the computer.

I took my Dell laptop and tried surfing using the built-in Wifi for a while. 2 hours later...working fine. So I tried pluging the ethernet cable to the laptop, worked fine again.

So now i'm thinking it HAS to be the computer. So switched the built-in Airport Wifi on the iMac on and tried it out. 2 1/2 hours later...everything works great. WHAT THE HELL!?

I'm thinking, since it just suddenly happened, the problem must've been triggered by some sort of update I did(which I don't remember if I did).

I searched the Apple Support forums and it turns out, several people have had the same/similar problem with their Macs with no solution.

I really DON'T feel like calling Apple because they will most likely want me to schedule an appointment and have me bring it in. This iMac is replacing an older G5 powermac which cost me about $5k five years ago. I had nothing but issues(the usualy ones everyone has with them) with it and have lugged it over to the Apple store almost a dozen times. It even started to show it with all the scuffs and scratches on the case it aquired during transport.
The LAST thing I want to do is have to bring my computer over there.

Can anyone help me out with this? Has anyone else had this issue before?

Specs are as follows:

27in iMac
2.8GHz Quad-core i7
10.6.3 Snow Leopard
4GB Ram
1TB HD
etc.

ISP:
Verizon Fios Fiber Optic
Motorola(I think) router.

I have been having the same problem on my quad core i7 iMac, so hoping someone chimes in with a solution.

This is a long shot, but one easy thing I'd try is blowing any dust out of the ports. One of my old iMacs had a flaky ethernet connection that cleared up once I took the back off and blew dust out of the machine (with the new ones, you can't really disassemble, but you can still try blowing dust out of the ports).

Worth a try but I am not too sure it will work. Thanks for the suggestion though!

when its disconnecting you from the internet check immediately your ip address of the imac , sometimes even macs have the mad idea to change ip to a 169.254.xxx.yyy instead of 192.168.xxx.yyy
its used if is set for DHCP but can't locate a DHCP server

Some HS Internet modems and "some" devices (including Apple) have difficulties with DHCP and auto-auto settings. As a suggestion, change NIC card to 100 Megs and Full Duplex (assuming your HS modem supports these fixed settings). Give these changes a try for a while.

If still having problems, remove DHCP and set to fixed IP Addressing. Check your brand of modem for recommended "availalbe" fixed IP range.

Changing to fixed speed, fix duplex and fixed IP Addressing with fixed DNS Server IP address settings fixed my workstation's random connectivity drops.

Good luck..
