2. When I was having my email from my Gmail account transferred into the Mail program, it stopped at 194 messages when I know I have more. How can I make it transfer the rest?
3. In the account preferences, I want to change the short name and delete other accounts. However, some things don't work. I cannot unchange the "Allow user to administer this computer" and the short name, and when I click on to delete the other accounts, I can't--it's grayed out. My account, too, and I'm the administrator!
4. How do I make a simple voice recording in Garage Band? This is necessary for my Spanish class. Can I use my Logitech microphone with the 3.5mm input connection?
So far, these have been my most annoying problems I can remember, and any help would be very much appreciated.
1. iLife apps are included on the Tiger restore discs that come with the iMac. Apple does this so you can't install it on other computers.
3. You have to click on the little padlock in the bottom left corner. It needs to be in the unlocked position.
For #3: Make sure the padlock in the lower left corner is open (unlocked). To my knowledge it's not possible to remove administrator privileges from yourself, only from other users.

3. You normally can't change the short name after you've created an account (though if you Google for it you'll find some scripts that let you do so). You have to create a new account and pick the short name you want.
You can't delete an account if it's the only one left (or maybe the only admin left, too?)

Purchase Quicktime Pro. It's well worth it especially since you have a built in video camera and mic. Quicktime pro lets you record video from your isight as well as record audio. It has a lot of other benefits as well, like the ability to export video to different formats (including the video ipod format), watch quicktime movies full screen, etc.

Status: POP is enabled for all mail that has arrived since Aug 21." Now, I signed up prior to August 21, so obviously I won't be able to download all the mail. Now, I'm not sure if they are reffering to August 21, 2004 or 2005...
Anyway, I've tried downloading all my Gmail messages to Apple Mail, and I noticed that at times when I thought it had finished, it was actually still working on an email with a rather large attachment.

The problem with the account preferences is that it will not allow me to click on any other person even with the padlock unlocked. I cannot click on the account to even select it for deletion. Do I have to take off the passwords for each account in order to delete it? This is really kinda frustrating.

Are you signed in with an admin account? Only admin accounts can delete other users.
Regarding #4 in your original post.
You can use garage band. Under the menu item "track" select "new basic track." A new track will be generated and become the active track. Click on the record button. You might be better off using quicktime, though, garage band seems like overkill. You used to be able to record using the free quicktime, not sure if you still can. Try it. I have the pro version so I can not test this one out.
About the microphone, you need a powered microphone (e.g. a usb microphone or a microphone with a its own power source) as the input jack is a line level jack. However, I believe the iMac also has a built in microphone, thus negating the need for an external microphone. Not 100% sure as I do not have a current iMac, my old imac had a built in microphone though.

Okay, I do have a problem here. I cannot delete other user accounts. Heck, I can't even click on them while I'm logged in. The only way I can mess with them in any way is to sign out and sign in under their accounts. When I can't click on them, I cannot press the minus sign to delete them. Under each account it says "Standard," and that word is grayed. I understand you cannot change the shortname, but why can't I get rid of the rest, or even tinker with them, while under the administrative account? And it is unlocked.
On a brighter note, it was a big attatchment getting in the way for the email download, and I got garage band working for me (a tad overkill, yes, but it works!). Thanks!

Regarding being unable to delete user accounts.
I believe you have missed a critical step.
You need to click on the closed padlock and enter your password.
1) Log in to your administer account.
2) From your administer account, launch system preferences.
3) Navigate to the "Accounts" system preference pane.
4) In the bottom left hand corner there is a icon of a padlock. The pad lock is likely in the closed position. Click on the padlock. The system will prompt you for your password. Enter the password and hit return (or press the "OK" button. The individual accounts can now be deleted (or new accounts added). You will notice that the word "standard" that was grayed out when previously tried is now black.

I just had another thought ... what do you mean by the minus sign?
Are you talking about the plus and minus signs in the accounts system preference pane?
Or are you talking about the little red and white minus sign on the folder icons of accounts that you are not logged into (example the Library folder of an account that you are not logged into?) when viewed with the finder. Even as an administrator, you do not have the privileges to view the folder contents, add files, delete files, or change the folder names of other accounts protected folders. I believe that you can do this via the terminal and the sudo command, but not in the finder at least not to that extent. You can drop new files into those protected folders by using the finder (you will be prompted for your admin password, I think) but you can not view the folder contents.

Okay, I know about the padlock. I have already said the padlock is unlocked. And, no, the standard remains grayed. And the plus and minus signs I am talking about are the ones at the bottom of the list of the different accounts in the account preferences. I am doing everything I am asked of, and it still does not allow me to delete the accounts. Is there something wrong with the software? To get some more responses, I will make this its own thread.
