I have searched for an answer and know that some Macs do not give enough juice to charge an iPad. But....

My last iMac (late 2009) seemed to have no trouble charging my iPad. My new one (mid 2010) cannot charge it (iPad says "not charging" next to battery meter.

It is the only peripheral connected to USB. I am still in the return window, so could exchange if it is a problem with my USB ports.

Thanks for the help,

yep tried all 4 of them...
The iPad does trickle charge when the screen is off, but not like it should if the USB ports of the iMac would output the extra charge that they should.

On the phone with Apple Care. iMac support says if iPad is recognised there should be no problem with the USB ports.

looks like apple downgraded the usb ports on the new imacs.....

mid 2010 is no longer listed as having the high charge ports...

support document is from July 14 2010.... so might not yet reflect the 2010 iMacs?

could anyone tell me if they are successfully charging an iPad from a mid 2010 27" imac?

Thanks!

One quick question, is the iMac completely "ON"while the iPad is charging or are you charging the iPad with the iMac in sleep mode or standby or off?

Something is wrong with your USB ports. Do you have an iPhone/iPod or some other USB charging device you can test to make sure? I would bet that's the issue.

I highly doubt Apple would revise it's iMac line to not charge as well for one of their most marketed devices.

Thanks guys,

All software updated. iPad charges fine from both iPad and iPhone charger. iPhone charges fine, iPad only trickle charge. AFAIK should be more than just that.

Those of you charging fine from mid 2010 iMacs, does the iPad state that it is charging?

Funny... when starting up from the install DVD neither iPhone or iPad even recognise that they are plugged in, let alone there being any charge.

Apple Care says there is definitely a problem with the USB ports.

Apple store manager asked his tech guys who say it's normal for an iPad connected to an iMac to display "not charging" but trickle charge nevertheless.

Only way to find out is to bring back my mac to the store, or go there first with the iPad to find out if the behavior is normal after all.

Those of you for whom there is a normal charge, can you check in system profiler if the iPad draws more than 500mA? Is stated under USB.

Thanks.

Do you think you could answer my question on post #5?

Sorry,

Of course iMac is on. Was on it all the time while talking to AppleCare.

Did read about the standby/off thing.

Thanks.

Charged 2% in 30 minutes while off... that is trickle charge I guess...

So the Apple store would not find any fault with that.

Again, I am not fussed with using the wall charger. It's just that I am worried my USB ports are at fault here. And as I am in the return window I am very happy to hear your experiences.

I thought that the iPad was higher wattage than regular USB, and that It could only charge from the iPhone & iPad chargers.
Before I got rid of mine, It would not charge (maybe trickle) on my 13" MacBook Pro, as well as my 20" 2.1GHz iMac G5.

Dwhite78, what does the iPad display show while it charges? The normal charging sign?

Thanks, probably will go by the Apple store to first see if my iPad will charge normally on their iMacs before lugging my iMac there...

Even tho your iMac should charge your iPad, it's faster to use the power adapter that came with it. When your iPad is connected to your iMac, it should NOT say "NOT CHARGING". You should make a genius appt.

Hi guys, it was a problem with the OS. I was using an image from my last iMac late 2009. After I reinstalled OSX everything worked perfectly!

Update to 10.6.5 Fixes the problem permanently ! My iPad is charging again ! No more system reinstall required.
