new iMac not 'seeing' iPhone

I purchased an i7 iMac yesterday and installed my previous OS from my Macbook using external HD and the Super Duper program (the OS is 10.6.2).

I connected my iPhone and it 'saw' it and allowed a sync but only the first time, now when I connect the phone it does not appear in iTunes.

It does charge when plugged into the iMac, and I've checked it by connecting to the laptop so it still works.

I was wondering if it was something to do with permissions, some of my songs will now not play on the iMac as it says they have been activated on too many computers (I only have two, but it may be because I got through three MacBooks before I got a good one).

Does anyone have any ideas before I call Apple and they advise to reinstall the entire OS??

Pull the USB and plug it back in. If that doesn't help, restart the computer and see if it finds the iPhone. It takes a little while for the OS to settle in completely.

Make sure iTunes 9.1 is installed. Version 8.x will have problems detecting iPhones.

You have a few options here.

A. You can check and make sure all the latest updates are installed.
B. (after installing updates, if any) shut down your computer, disconnect the iPhone's USB cable and turn it back on.
C. Try different USB ports (there have been some faulty ones).
D. Sounds like you're still well within your warranty coverage if you got the machine yesterday, give Apple a call and see what's up.

the OS is totally up to date, iTunes too.

I've tried restarts on the computer and the iPhone, plugged in & out etc with no luck. tried different USB ports on the iMac too.

I'm just guessing (I'm no expert here!) but is that not a potential source of the problem? If you've copied the entire OS across from the macbook to the iMac, won't all of the system files be referencing and addressing macbook hardware and not iMac hardware, which may cause conflicts (like the phone not being picked up?)

There is an option when you first start a new mac to transfer the data across from an old mac - maybe that way would have been better?

As I said, just a guess.

sorry, my mistake....

I connected the external FW drive, and was going to boot it up and use the Super Duper program, but when I first started up the iMac it gave me an option to transfer stuff across from the external drive which is what I chose to do.

After that the iMac worked fine, but it wouldnt play some of the songs on iTunes ("too many computers authorised") and after the first sync with iPhone it now no longer sees the phone.
