I have a friend who wants to buy an iMac but he does not live in USA, he lives in Brazil.

Due the 'exchange rate' a new iMac would cost about $ 2.300 instead of $1.500 of the current model (20'' 2.66GHz).

Concluding: Would you accept to pay about $800 more for a new model of iMac? Do you think it will worth?

Blame the Brazilian government for imposing excessive import duty.

You think that is bad? You should see how much an iMac costs in South Africa, for example....

Not at all, they're overpriced enough to begin with. Why don't you have him pay you and then you buy it and ship it to him?

If I ship an iMac certainly it will be taxed (almost 100%) when it arrive in Brazil.

The funniest thing is that nowdays the current model of iMac is cheaper in Brazil than USA because they didn't adjust the price after the oscilations of the exchange rate!

But they will do it when new models come out to the market, of course!

Just tell him that buy it now, there will be no major update in iMac, only speed bumbs (DDR3, better CPUs and GPUs, LED display (?)... So, no new design or any "WOW" effects from new ones. "Buy it if you need it now", I've said that for everyone.

Quadcore CPU, NVidia chipset, DDR3, better GPU and LED display. I'd say that's worth waiting for... I'm not sure I'd pay $800 extra for it though.

It is not a problem to wait...

The fact is a new model will be at least $800 more expensive (here in Brazil). And the question is: will it worth?

No i dont think so.
If he needs a faster computer like ones what will be coming out, you can get a mac pro (todays version) in brazil and it should be faster than a new imac (future version)

He was going for 2.66GHz so he don't really need more speed (becouse there are still 2 more powerful options left), so yeah it's worth of waiting but not worth of extra $800 for just minor speed bumbs.

Go for it NOW
