Need a bit of advice..

Bought my trusty Intel iMac Core Duo back in summer 2006 and it has been great. 24in and I have gotten huge usage out if it. I use it a lot, mainly for web browsing, email, watching DVD's, some work stuff that needs to be done after I get home (Document amending, some Excel work etc).

But it's approaching it's last legs now. The hard drive is beginning to give issues and it's just time to change it. I watch a lot of NFL videos on it from their site and those videos are really taxing the system.

Looking at the refurb store here, there are two 27in iMacs that look good. The i5 2.66 and the i7 2.8. Difference is about €120 between the two. Obviously neither are the current models on offer but they are both still very good performers from the research I've done.

Question is. Is it worth paying more to get the i7?

I'd also like to install Windows and put in MS Flight Simulator which is a real frame rate killer plus subscribe to NFL's Game Pass which we can get over here in Europe which shows all games live. So the 27in screen will come in handy to watch several games at once if I want.

To sum up, I use my Computer A LOT. As I suspect most people do here. It's my prime "entertainment" device now, I use it way more then my TV/DVD Player etc.

So a good computer is important.

Your usage doesn't really benefit from the i7 so I would just save the Euros and go for the i5. You can spend the difference on ext HD or AppleCare for example

Thanks for that HH.

Thats what I thought. I can take the extra money I might have spent on the 2.8 i7 and buy the new Apple TV.

Instead of getting a new Apple TV, why not just get AppleCare. It will guarantee your machine to last 3 years.

Is the possibility of waiting for noew models to reach the refurb store not an option? I mean, it will not affect your usage, but the newer machine will have better value in the future.

BTW, is AppleCare just 120 euro?!

Not sure... I live in the US, and it is $250 here. But, if you go on other online resellers, they can give you a discount. I have seen iMac applecare here in the us (on an online reseller, of course) for about $150 or so.... cant remember the site, though...

AppleCare for iMac is only 169$. In EU, I think it's 179€.

Extended warranties are hit or miss. The computer should last 3 years without a warranty.

You said it, should. If it doesn't, what are you going to do? A new logic board can be over 1000$. 169$ for AppleCare is nothing compared to it. Besides, ANY repair will cost more than the AppleCare.

It's just for peace of mind. It's likely that OP's iMac will be fine for 3 years but it's relatively small sum of money that will help you in case you have an issue.

Agree with Hellhammer. I service these systems. Repairs are through the roof. I'm not into extended warranties all that much, but Applecare is a must for me.....and I don't charge myself labor!

never ever buy a Mac without apple care (buy apple care after the computer is about 10-11 month old )
its worth every cent , because if the logicboard or display fails after the 1 year warranty your only just over 1 year old iMac is a total write off

so get apple care its more important then any upgrade you might have in mind.
Some people still think a iMac is a high quality product that cant fail
and spend money on ram upgrades, ssd upgrades ,but dont invest in apple care,
they might get hit by reality and have a highly upgraded iMac only useful as paperweight after the 1 year warranty ended

just for example my 2006 iMac had last year while still under apple care replaced : logicboard ,powersupply, display, harddrive , so i dont believe apple would have replaced the parts if it would not have been necessary

and dont expect a apple repair extension program as they keep these secret, until YOU tell them that they have a repair extension program in place ,
most find out about after these repair extension programs had expired since a couple month
