New Imac redesign?

I think it's a safe bet that this post is not supported by any inside information. They even use the word "maybe" -- I think the chance of a redesigned iMac next week is less than 1%. Apple doesn't seem to be as airtight as it used to be, and you can bet that we'd've seen rumors if there was going to be a chassis redesign.
 
That's what I thought, would be nice if it was slim like in the pic though, not that it is thick by any means in it's current state.
 
I seriously doubt it, and honestly, I hope they don't. Am I the only one who actually likes the chin? Personally I think the chin is a good size now. Admittedly, it was a bit much perhaps with the white iMacs, but even then I didn't really get the hate for it.
 
Honestly, what more do you guys want other then more I/O? (Not talking about specs here, design only) Huge gorgeous screens and one power cord?

Not sure what else they could do lol.
 
A slimmer iMac wount not be an advantage its small enough as it is! and why get rid of a cd drive in a desktop its hardly like size matters?

If the new imac grew an inch deeper for better cooling it would make no difference at all!
 
I wouldn't call that a rumor, but more speculation. A wishlist of what changes could potentially be made.

Personally, I don't see the need to make the iMac skinnier. It's a desktop. I'm not carrying it around with me. And I don't see how providing a thinner setup would make it fit places where the current model couldn't. Since I'm not concerned about weight/portability, I'll gladly sacrifice thin for performance(desktop cpus and gpus, SSD/HD combos, etc.).
 
I would hate to see them drop the DVD drive. Not everyone has a high speed connection for downloading movies in HD format. In the U.S., download speed is a joke compared to other countries, plus the cable cos/telcos are seriously thinking of download caps in order to charge more. Even a 20MB connection isn't that great if you are limited to 200GB a month or so.
 
Im glad I'm not the only person who doesn't want the optical drive to go already...I may not use it daily but I know for a fact I'd rather have it built in then have an external one sitting on my desk or something.

I am not ready to transition out of optical yet either. I think in a few generations down the road we will no longer have optical drives but we are just not quite there yet.
 
But... Apple is that company that i see jumping into the future rather quickly, So i really wouldnt be surprised to see them take the next step with the iMac. But I'd think the MBP would get that update first?

If the optical is dropped in anything, it will be the MBP first. Given the amount of available space in a desktop (even the iMac) there is zero point in removing the optical now, as it won't provide any benefit in the way of thickness or overall size. Whereas, in a notebook like the MBP, it does take up a considerable amount of space that could be otherwise utilized for more battery, a discrete GPU for the 13", or another HDD and better cooling. That said, many people still do use the optical drive (I do personally for games, music, occasional DVDs), and would prefer to keep it built in. What I would like to see is optical drive removal in the higher end 13" to allow better graphics for those who would like them.

As for the iMac, I don't want to see it get thinner, it gets hot enough as it is, and it wouldn't make a functional difference, only slightly better aesthetics.
 
i agree MBP may be first, but I feel like for a good amount of Apple's consumers, the optical drive is a differentiation from the MBA. for tech-savy, it obviously goes deeper than that, but for the everyday computer user, it's a notable difference, because it's visible.
 
I use the optical drive all the time and must have at least one system that will read and write them. That said, the optical drive in the iMac is awkward to access and tends to scratch (and occasionally destroy) the disk. So I wouldn't mind if it went away and I simply used an external drive with a tray.

The only thing I'd want is more USB ports, including one on the side or front for memory sticks.

And your complaining? Here in NZ i pay around 100USD for merely a 500kb/s actual download rate connection with a cap of 80GB.
 
I have a free unlimited usage 100mbps fibre to the premises connection, it drives me nuts man, waiting about 3 minutes to download a HD film. I wish they'd hurry up and sort out 1gbps already!!!!

Although i don't see Apple removing the optical drive in the approaching refresh I can see them making this change in a redesign.

My reasoning for this being Apple already has the MacBook Air SuperDrive which is a cost effective USB optical drive that could be a replacement for the built-in SuperDrive.
