Hi all

I have taken a full backup of my old MBP unibody and used it to fund my new iMac

When it turns up should i restore the time machine backup onto the iMac ??
I know its a different type of machine but will the backup work without causing any problems??

Both machines came with snow leopard

I don't believe (and I could easily be wrong) that you can restore a Time Machine backup to different hardware.

What you definitely can do is use Migration Assistant to move your Mail, apps etc from one machine/your Time Machine backup to the new one.

Or alternatively, you can move things over manually - a little more tedious than Migration Assistant but it affords granularity/allows for "spring cleaning".

If you don't gunk up your macs with stuff like I do :p just use Migration Assistant I'd say.

EDIT: Here we go. Google isn't your friend and don't think it is; but it can find stuff http://www.tuaw.com/2008/10/29/6-easy-steps-to-migrate-your-mac-using-time-machine/ .

You need to TM your MBP and then use Migration Assistant to put it on your iMac. Not sure if you can go straight to using time machine. I bought my iMac used and the guy already installed a fresh OSX copy so I just researched and found out MA is how Apple wants you to do it. After that, just log into your main "time machined" account and delete the other from the iMac.
