Since there have been a lot of kind of... depressing threads lately, I thought I would let you guys stretch out a bit and tell a newer OS X guy what you like.

I ordered a 24" iMac 2.93 GHz, 4GB Ram, 4850 ATI card for my Fiance. It was JUST delivered, its running, the updates are installed, its been on WiFi for a little while with no lock-ups (still early I know), and I want to start loading it up for her.

So could you tell me what you think works best for...

Instant Messaging App (AIM Only really needed)
Nice, easy to use Archive program (Would be nice if it handled RAR, ZIP, 7z)

Good video application. I am going to look now and see if they have VLC, but if not, something similar to VLC (all in one, no extra Codecs needed for most things)

And I will add more when I think of them, I think I just need to throw on Office and WoW for now.

Any other suggestions of cool OS X apps that make it fun to use?

Thanks!

I've used VLC for years on PC. Loved it. Same results on Mac. However, I recently found Plex and haven't looked back. Much better performance than VLC.

Yeah I use Plex on my Mini for an amazing HTPC experience. I was just hoping to give her a standalone player. I should install it anyway and give her my TV Shows and all that. She likes the stuff I watch so it may not be a bad idea.

Thanks for the reply!
