Yes I can see those specs being realistic. But not before April or May.
Why do you say April/May? That would make it 10 months between updates which seems unrealistic

I'm sure for Mac Pro seekers, at 10 months from update, it seemed unrealistic too. And the MP didn't get a full update for 18 months! I'm sure there needs to be some sort of lead time between introduction of new processors and implementation in new Mac models, no? So I don't think 4 months after intro is too long.
It was well more than a year between previous updates.
When changing a processor, it's simply a matter of taking one CPU out, and putting the new one in, so no, I don't think Apple need 4 months to do this. Especially while other Manufacturers are releasing new Penryn systems already.
The iMacs still compare quite favorably to other computers, so I can see them holding off until May/June for the newer processors.
Well bud, I was simply stating that the updates for the MP took WAAAAAY longer than anybody thought was realistic, internal redesign or not. What I've learned on these boards is to not get too worked up about Apple coming later to the game than other manufacturers. If you'd rather have something NOW that is similarly powered, then buy those other guys' crap. Otherwise just don't let yourself get geared up to be dissapointed when stuff comes out later than you'd like.![]()
Basically, the only reason I'm enquiring is because I want to buy an iMac but I currently have a Windows PC that is the same spec (Core2 Duo 2.4GHz), so I'm kinda reluctant to pay £1100 for a mac with the same spec if you get what I mean.

Yeah. I get what you mean. Paying for the Apple experience has always been more expensive. Which is why it took me 30 years to own my first Mac. I never felt like I could justify the expense. FYI, I bought a new 24" 2.4 and maxed out the RAM with a Crucial kit. If quad cores come out this summer, I'll sell my iMac on eBay and spend a few hundred $ on a new model. Now that I finally have my Mac, I know I'll contantly be trading up.
It might be the same specs, but it's definitely not the same operating system... that makes a HUGE difference.
Yeah, but come on... £1100 just for an operating system?
Why don't you sell your PC?
Gaz,
I sincerley hope your update comes as soon as possible. Even though my iMac is currently being built, and should arrive sometime next week.
I would however suggest that you read this article in the interest of having all of the information before you decide whether to wait or buy now.

I ordered one of the current 2.8ghz imacs when they came out last august. Intel announced the CPU the day after it was delivered! Apple seem to have a very close relationship with Intel these days, so an update could come at any time, including before the processors are officially available.
Then again, the new processors aren't that much different from the current ones, so I think there's not so much of a rush for apple to get them out.
Well, all I can say is, I hope this is the reason my iMac 24" order from the Apple Store online just got delayed by a week...
