Just found this from Apple Insider (See Article)

Do these spec's seem realistic? When do you think Apple will announce the new products?

Yes I can see those specs being realistic. But not before April or May.

Why do you say April/May? That would make it 10 months between updates which seems unrealistic

I'm sure for Mac Pro seekers, at 10 months from update, it seemed unrealistic too. And the MP didn't get a full update for 18 months! I'm sure there needs to be some sort of lead time between introduction of new processors and implementation in new Mac models, no? So I don't think 4 months after intro is too long.

But the difference between the Mac Pro and the iMac is the iMac is a consumer product, whereas Apple assumes that once you purchase a Mac Pro, you will be using that machine for years to come.

Also, MBP updates (with the new Penryn processors) are expected fairly soon. When changing a processor, it's simply a matter of taking one CPU out, and putting the new one in, so no, I don't think Apple need 4 months to do this. Especially while other Manufacturers are releasing new Penryn systems already.

It was well more than a year between previous updates.

It was actually 11 months between the last iMac update and it's previous, and yes ok, that's fair enough, but that was due to the redesign. Previous to that (as with majority of Apples other computer products), Apple generally tend to update on a 6 month cycle, and I doubt we'll be waiting 11 months for a simply processor update.

Also note that the 2nd round of Penryn processors will be released in May along with the new Montevina chipset. They will feature a 1066MHz FSB and support for DDR3 RAM. The iMacs still compare quite favorably to other computers, so I can see them holding off until May/June for the newer processors.

Current: 2.0/2.4/2.8 C2E
Penryn: 2.1/2.5/2.8 C2E
2nd round: 2.26/2.53/3.06 C2E

Well bud, I was simply stating that the updates for the MP took WAAAAAY longer than anybody thought was realistic, internal redesign or not. What I've learned on these boards is to not get too worked up about Apple coming later to the game than other manufacturers. If you'd rather have something NOW that is similarly powered, then buy those other guys' crap. Otherwise just don't let yourself get geared up to be dissapointed when stuff comes out later than you'd like.

Basically, the only reason I'm enquiring is because I want to buy an iMac but I currently have a Windows PC that is the same spec (Core2 Duo 2.4GHz), so I'm kinda reluctant to pay £1100 for a mac with the same spec if you get what I mean.

Yeah. I get what you mean. Paying for the Apple experience has always been more expensive. Which is why it took me 30 years to own my first Mac. I never felt like I could justify the expense. FYI, I bought a new 24" 2.4 and maxed out the RAM with a Crucial kit. If quad cores come out this summer, I'll sell my iMac on eBay and spend a few hundred $ on a new model. Now that I finally have my Mac, I know I'll contantly be trading up.

It might be the same specs, but it's definitely not the same operating system... that makes a HUGE difference.

I know what you mean, and if I hadn't got my PC, I would definately buy the current iMac, no questions. I don't mind paying the premium for Apple because I love the OS, etc (I previously had a G4 Powerbook), but I've had my PC for a year now, and to spend £1100 now on a Mac with the same spec as my year old PC just seems stupid.

Gaz,
I sincerley hope your update comes as soon as possible. Even though my iMac is currently being built, and should arrive sometime next week.

I would however suggest that you read this article in the interest of having all of the information before you decide whether to wait or buy now.

Hi Fivepoint,
Thanks for your input. I have seen that article pop up a few times around the forum, but it's almost February. For my MBP, I have set a deadline of the end of February for the update, but the iMac isn't as important due to having my PC if you know what I mean? If the iMac was a quad core or even if the 2.8GHz was in my price range, I would order one straight away :)

I ordered one of the current 2.8ghz imacs when they came out last august. Intel announced the CPU the day after it was delivered! Apple seem to have a very close relationship with Intel these days, so an update could come at any time, including before the processors are officially available.

Then again, the new processors aren't that much different from the current ones, so I think there's not so much of a rush for apple to get them out.

I think it's more important on the MBP's though because they are still on 2.2GHz which for the price, is quite slow. The new processors for the MBP are said to be 2.5GHz for base model and 2.6GHz for the higher model.

Well, all I can say is, I hope this is the reason my iMac 24" order from the Apple Store online just got delayed by a week...

Apple Store is down, so it could be, but I seriously doubt it. The iMac is the last in line this year to be upgraded (Macbook Pro, Macbooks should be next).

Although yesterday I was advised that my order was delayed by another week, today the order was updated to "Prepared for Shipment".
