New Imac this year?

Hi everyone!

I'm thinking on buying an Imac but there's no rush, I can wait.
I have a PC (AMD A10 with SSD) that works fine with the SSD upgrade, but I want to create family movies and I remember the easiest way to make movies using imovie and Final cut, then I was looking at imac to go back to mac (I got a macbook 2007).

I used my cousin's new Imac with HD 5400 rpm and it's horrible, for me SSD is necesary. Then I was wondering if you thing that this year apple will introduce new imacs with SSD.

Just my opinion, I think that IF Apple releases new iMacs this year, it won't be until late in the year. My bet is next year.

You should suggest an external SSD to use as a boot drive. It is easy to do, and this would probably speed things up for him.

Apple currently has SSD options for the iMac, and has had SSD BTO options for years. Are you referring to the base models?

Yea, it is pretty sad that Apple is still putting HDD in the base model iMacs.... Or any Macs....

Hi, thanks for your reply.

I already suggested doing that but he said: "with how nice is the imac, I do not like to put wires on it..." well, is his choice. He is thinking on replaicing the mac with an SSD option.

And yep, I was refering to the base models in order to make it cheaper :) I have read that high sierra have an SSD improved system and for me it sounds like all new models have to come with SSD... dreaming is free :)

It is not as easy and simple as an external SSD, but you can replace the internal HDD with an SSD.
 
I'm waiting for new iMac in June, like last year.

If you're in no hurry I think you should wait too, the 8th gen Intel CPU are a significant upgrade.

It would be great to see base iMac with SSD, Apple will do it at some point for sure but no one knows when. If they decide to use the iMac Pro redesigned internals I think they will have to do it.

Agreed. Also at some point Apple will get a redesigned version out which will probably really seperate the iMac Pro from it but tough to say on when this will come about but the FOXCONN insider on reddit mentioned a new iMac for 2018 in the works

These posters were later revealed to be imposters. I wouldn't count on anything they said.

The accurate "leaks" such as those you mentioned were vague and/or information that was already leaked. They were wrong on a few points (TouchID under the glass, 32GB in 2017 MBP, A9 in HomePod, no wireless charging on the "iPhone 7s"). I have to admit I thought there was more evidence that they were fake from what I remembered. Still, it looks to me like educated guesses.

Is there a post somewhere that says these were "hoaxers" or something like that?

They didn't say Touch ID would be under the glass; they said the opposite---it wasn't coming because there were low yield rates.

I'm not saying they are legit---I'm saying they weren't off on everything and I have not seen a post, article, etc, where it is said these guys were hoaxers.

Rereading it now I see that there could still be some doubts in some people's mind. Personally I think there's enough evidence against the veracity of their information not to trust them.

We'll see this year with their claims of redesigned iMac and eink keyboards, if they got that right then I'd have to admit they were the real deal!
 
I'm in a similar position to the OP, I'm seriously considering upgrading my late 2012 iMac (27" 3.4 i7, 16GB Ram, 750 SSD) to a 2017 model (most likely 27" 3.8 i5, 32GB Ram, 1TB SSD).

I'm not convinced we'll necessarily see a 2018 iMac (like there was no 2016 iMac), the current line of iMacs are fine machines and more than cover the needs of most users, and if you do require more performance than the iMac has to offer, there's the iMac Pro. Part of me just can't see Apple going for the Coffee Lake 6 core in the iMac this year, I just don't see Apple wanting to close the performance/differentiation between the iMac and iMac Pro (which let's not forget is only 4 months old). Don't get me wrong, I hope they do release a 2018 iMac, if new Coffee Lake six-core iMacs were announced next week I wouldn't hesitate to place an order before the end of the month.

I always remember a colleague (and Mac fan) once saying to me about buying computers 'if you hold off on a purchase because of what 'might' be on the horizon/around the corner, you'll never buy anything'.

If you compare Intel's CPUs release dates and Apple's, you'll see that Apple faithfully upgraded the iMac for every Intel generations for quite a while. Intel's 6*** were released in Q3 2015, followed closely by the 2015 iMac in October. Then there was no adequate CPUs until Q1 2017 with the 7*** CPUs, which were added the current iMac in June. Part of the 8th gen is already out since Q4 2017 so I think we will see new iMac in Q2-3 2018.

Also, the iMac is a different beast with the Xeon processor, ECC RAM etc for a specific kind of users. Apple is not going to stop releasing iMac for a while just to make it look better. They are competing against other desktop manufacturers that have already started to move to Intel's 8th gen.
 
Everyone is hoping for a hex core iMac this year but I doubt we'll see it before next year.

Apple is already selling the iMac Pro for the folks that need more performance so it is in no hurry to upgrade the current iMac line up (which is pretty amazing with the polaris GPUs).

I tend to agree, and thought WWDC was likely.

But now I'm thinking late 2018 is more likely, so Apple can wait until the Coffee Lake chips with Meltdown/Spectre hardware fixes ship ("second half of this year").
