... old iLife.

I've been holding off a while getting set up with a decent desktop system, and decided the time was right (ie payday happened). Went to my local Apple store, and got myself a shiny new i5 27", but was disappointed to find it has iLife '09 on it rather than '11 (the store was doing a reasonable trade in people upgrading to '11 while I was there). I guess it's understandable that less than a week after release, they won't have upgraded their existing stock. Hopefully they'll be willing to upgrade me if I go back. On the plus side, no dead pixels, no appearance of yellow or grey on the screen and no unwanted noises. Even better, the apple store swaped the standard Swiss-German keyboard for an English one for me, as I can't cope with the y/z transposition (at work I use a Swiss keyboard and remap it, but it makes it easier to find the more seldom used special characters when you have the right keyboard in front of you).

If you're asking if they will give you iLife '11 for free? Then there is only one way to find out; however, I would, hazard a guess, that they would.

BTW: Congrats on your purchase.

Id take your recent, and go back to the store, or call up apple care. Either way, I bet they would take care of you and hook you up with the new Ilife.

I bought my iMac at the beginning of the month and as such qualify for an upgrade to iLife for only £7 so I'm sure as you bought yours after it was released you should get it free. Just go back to the store and ask them

Congrats on the iMac, I bought the same one today as well. I asked my salesperson about that and he said that while the iMac has the old version of iLife on it, it will come with the new DVD in the iMac box. If it wasn't in yours, I'd take a copy of your sales ticket to the store and they should give you one for free, or at the most charge you the $6 upgrade fee.

*Edit - For what it's worth, I haven't actually opened the box yet. I had to go to work shortly after getting home with the iMac, so I just put the box in my study and left it there. I'll get to it all tomorrow morning.

Probably not, and even if it was it would probably be very minor. You know how Apple is, we won't know until it's right on us and considering it was just refreshed this summer, I don't see it happening for quite a while. During that time you could be having some Apple goodness.

i am so damn tempted but the recent shape has been out for a year now and isnt it normally 2 years that they change the design.

i can deal with internal stuff being updated, but if a new one came out that looked different i would be annoyed. I know its stupid, but thats just the way I am.
how many years has it been in the past between chassis changes?

I think they're going to try to design something with a touch screen. :)

It shouldn't matter that much to the operability, however. Imagine the current iMac with the Magic Trackpad on the screen instead of at your hand, that's all.

Besides, if you don't break down and buy something sometime, you'll be waiting forever for that next best thing on the horizon.

Just ordered my own iMac today.

Did you expect them to open the box up and install the new version? Then people would be complaining about buying a "used machine."

If you've purchased a qualifying computer that does not include iLife ’11, you can upgrade to iLife ’11 for $6.99.*

Call them and they will ship it to you. If you really want you can complain in the store enough and they might give you one off the shelf.

What I would have hoped was the guy at the apple store said to me, "I'm afraid this mac only has the old version of iLife installed on it, here is a copy of the new version you can install when you get your mac home." I'm happy to accept that they are only human, though, and were having to deal with a substantial crowd of people after the new Airs (they seemed to be flying off the shelves when I was there), so I'll go back with my receipt and ask them about it when I can next get into town.

I was going to make some sarcastic comment about having to spend CHF10 on something I should have already bought, but then it occurred to me that the train fare to get to the Apple Store to try to get it in person will be more than that, and that's ignoring it using my time up. Ah well, thanks for pointing me in the right direction.

Glad I could be of help. An alternative you could try is to call AppleCare, explain what has occurred and maybe they'd send a copy for free.
