New iMac!

Hey all. I got my new 20" iMac today, one word IT ROCKS <<that was two whoops!

I simply love the speed, peple are serious about seeing the increaase of finder speed and even rosetta apps are lightning fast unlike running XP on a PPC mac.

The one othe rthing I love is the keyboard. Maybe its just me but compared to an imac G5 keyboard it feels so much lighter to the touch. Maybe it's newness hasnt kicked in yet?

But I only have one issue though. Anticipating it's arrival I downloaded the Intel 10.4.8 COmbo update and upon installing it my system stayed on the white apple loading spinny screen for like forever. I know you have to wait several minutes but a whole 45 minutes I reverted back to the original 10.4.7 it came with and I guess I'll stick with that until I can acquire the delta updater.

OMG, I just realized more of its speed openiing activity monitor again!

But I can't wait to really use my mac to its full potential. It's a base 20" C2D BTW!

Do you mean Virtual PC, because these two (rosetta and XP on PPC) are quite unrelated.

Yeah I know they're unrealted but I just wanna make a point that running PPC code on x86 is faster than running x86 code on PPC! Maybe I wasn't clear...

That's awesome. Enjoy. I ordered a Mini 1.66 refurb, was going to get a 24" iMac but decided to get the Mini until Leopard.

Bummer is FedEx Ground tried to deliver it today and I missed them by 30 minutes. Now I have to wait for them to bring it tomorrow.

Well I am putting 2GB RAM in it when I get it. And I'm not thrilled about the notebook drive, though a Ministack external FW400 with Seagate 7200.10 gives me good drive performance. Questions are:

1. Would I want to run OSX off the external too? Or do I really only need my video data on it?

2. Once I slam a 2.16 or 2.33 in the Mini, all things are fairly equal except the video RAM. How much will that affect things like iMovie, iDVD, iTunes, Handbrake etc, and eventually FCE. No Gaming.

3. The Mini's also don't have FW800 or the new 802.11n cards (do they). I know it is replacable, but what is the speed of the Superdrive?

1) if your external pops out your os x pops out with it `
2) I think iMovie works with graphics quite a bit, the other shoul be lightning fast. still no gaming, unless you like OS X chess?
3) I think its the ssaem as the iMac superdrive

Congrats on your purchase! I have the exact same model, a base C2D 20" along with a Dell 2007wfp monitor. I was going to put 2GB in it, but I'm going to wait until memory prices cool down a bit.

I have to disagree about Rosetta apps being lightning fast. They're not bad, and they're still what I would call reasonably quick, but I use Macromedia Fireworks a LOT and sometimes it gets frustrating. It lags changing the context of the tool trays, for example, when I select a different object. I love Fireworks (I do all my web design in Fireworks) and am quite good with it. However, since Adobe bought Macromedia I'm worried if I'll ever get a Universal version of Fireworks. I can see Adobe just letting it die in favor of one of their products (none of which I like). For now, I suffer through with Rosetta.

In your experience could you compare rosetta to running on a 1.33Ghz iBook G4? <<I had one so I know it's limitations.

Photoshop is not better than Fireworks, it's a different product for a different purpose. If you don't know that, then you don't understand what Fireworks is really for. The closest Adobe app to Fireworks is ImageReady, but its interface and featureset are not up to task with Fireworks' (and Wikipedia agrees). Lots of people think that Photoshop and Fireworks are competitors, so I understand why you did, but they're not. I've had some really good Photoshop guys come work for me and they've never done web interface work before; most of the time, they struggle in Photoshop for awhile before seeing how easy it is for me to do some of these things in Fireworks, and they switch over for that type of work. Photoshop is a very powerful program, but for doing web interface work it's missing some important stuff. Photoshop for certain elements PLUS Fireworks for interface layout makes for a great combination.

Fortunately, from what I've found on various message boards and on Wikipedia, most people's impressions of Adobe's as-yet rather vague responses on the issue are that they will keep the current products through at least one more cycle, then possibly start integrating them or develop the lines further with greater differentiation to make sure they focus on different markets.

Ok I get it now. I always had the impression that they were competitors although you must admit that some of the filters/functions are verry similar!
