Hi Everyone.

I'm Thinking about buying an imac 21,5.

My question is.
Should I buy it now, or there are some expetations about new realeses soon,
just like Mac Pro or Cinema Display?

Thks for your time.

It's safe buy now. There won't be new ones before late June at the earliest and it'll be just a spec bump

Yeah I'd possibly hold off until the next iMac refresh for the 21.5 inch model. Given the cooler running mobility 5k series gpus that ati has, and the new clarkdales released by intel, you'd get quite an upgrade. The 5k series ati mobility gpus will be more powerful than the mobility 4670.

The quad core iMacs probably won't get much of an upgrade at all. Nothing really can be upped cpu wise or gpu wise. Everybody likes to talk about the 5k series mobility gpus, but they aren't one bit more powerful than the mobility 4850. Only mobility 4870 and 5870 are. Hell, the mobility 5750 is laughable, it doesn't support enough memory bandwidth to even take advantage of 1gb of dedicated graphics memory.

Am I the only one that remains more optimistic than just a spec bump?

I feel there may be more going on than we know with all the mac updates this year, especially as SJ hinted at taking them to the "next level".

What that really means is something we can only speculate at this point in time though.

"The next level" can't be other than touchscreen IMO. Do you have a link for that article 'cause I can't remember it :p

Of course there MAY be a huge update but the last one was the biggest since Intel and aluminum design which took place 3-4 years ago..

Ehhhhhhhh....I take back what I said. After today's abyssmal MBP updates, I now take SJ's statement with a grain of salt.

But for laughs, here is that article link:

I'm in the same boat, but I'm gonna wait until WWDC.

Buying a Core 2 Duo at this time seems silly to me. And if it's pretty much a certainty we'll see i5 processors in the 21.5" after WWDC, then it makes sense to wait if you don't need it this second.

So that's my plan. And if they don't put an i5 in the 21.5 by the end of June, then I'm really screwed.

And therein lies a problem. It's always a big gamble to expect anything from Apple. :(

Just look at today's MBP update. A lot of people have been hoping for an i3/i5 in the new 13" MBP, and now all I've been reading today have been b*itching and whining.

Well that's true. I was actually quite shocked at how much whining there was... I figured people'd be happy with an i5 option. But I guess more people like 13" than I thought...

But let's hope they do come through with quad core 21.5" iMacs. That would be nice. I'm also waiting till WWDC for a 27" refresh. I'm already this far along into the update cycle, so I might as well hold out till the refresh. :)

I'm pretty sure the low end model for upcoming iMacs will stick with C2D and the higher end 21.5 inch will get start off with i5 processor. If your willing to wait til mid summer-fall then I would wait, I myself is waiting for an update for the iMac line. Since Fall 2009 was a BIG update, we won't be seeing any new design til late 2011, early 2012. The next update will just be probably better graphics, more ram/hard drive, and quad cores.

I have the base 21.5inch iMac and I'd definitely say you should wait if possible. I'm planning on selling mine when more rumours start appearing. The current line has a few issues like the yellow-tinge and I've just started getting a noisy fan which is driving me nuts.

I'm also predicting that they'll get rid of the ridiculous 9400M in the base model (which causes sluggish OSX animations) and put in dedicated video memory like the new 15inch MacBook Pros have. It's also likely that they'll update the processors to i5s/i7s too.

They'll probably come out in about 6 months or so. The patience will be worth it IMO.

How would you be screwed?

What are you doing all day that would take advantage of an i5 processor and un-screw you?

Or are you just web surfing, emailing, itunes, iphoto, ichating all day?

Basically, what I mean is, I need a new computer for when I start college in September. I'm waiting for Apple to throw a better processor into the 21.5"

So if they don't update the 21.5" by September, I'll be screwed. Without a computer.

I think the next imac 25 and the low end 27 will have the core i3-530.It costs exactly the same as the e7600 that they are currently using at 133$ from intel. So it would be a no brainer.
Also they will get rid of the 9400m for a better dedicated gpu possibly the 5670. Better 2 wait for 2 more months...

I would just buy it now.

The sooner you expect the worse from Apple's hardware updates, the better. Apple has shown us time and time again that we will feel underwhelmed with their hardware specs. I'm a firm believer that Apple is a software company first. They have the best developers that are known for squeezing every little bit of juice out of otherwise obsolete hardware. If an older processor doesn't run as fast, then they'll tweak the software to make it run just as fast as the newer processor. This is why they have $30 billion in the bank. They put the cheapest (in a money sense) hardware in their products and have the software pick up the slack.
