Every time new iMac get introduced I go right away to check environmental reports,
https://www.apple.com/environment/reports/
and every time all these years new iMac been getting more powerful but have lower and lower power consumption and I think this may be the first time they increased noticeably!

21.5 2015 38.3W vs 2017 45.9W that's almost 20% more!

27 2015 60.1W vs 2017 68.3W that's almost 14% more

21.5 2013 37.0W, 2012 41.8W, 2011 85.6W, 2010 92.8W

27 2013 77.4W, 2012 78.9W, 2011 140W, 2010 149W

Really now…

What's the difference going to be in the electric bill between burning a 45 watt bulb one month, and burning a 75 watt bulb the same month?

Are there folks who actually get uptight about such things?

That struggle between a faster computer and a lighter electricity bill.

It's obviously not about electricity bill for one person, if every computer started taking 20% more power that wouldn't be good for the environment that we already mistreated. Some people care for something more than just money...

And yet on another thread, you're telling people to go and buy an Xbox instead of upgrading their iMac o_O

The 4K model might consume a few or several more watts at idle due to the new dedicated GPU. The non-4K model is probably just as efficient as the old one.

The 1080p model consumes 33 W at idle. The 4K model takes 49 W, which is also remarkable given that the Dell UP2414Q uses 60 W by itself.

Apple computers are impressively efficient. They don't waste energy. Don't worry about it.

It's your "powerful" imac...with nice gpu.

We all need to get off our high horse for a second.

Think about the stupidity of what we are discussing. We are talking less then 100 watts! That means that a computer with all the high power stuff they do. Is using less power then a freaking incandescent lightbulb!!!!

Think about that. Your computer using less power then a light bulb.

A thread about nothing. How unusual. If you want to save then planet, back to the cave, raw food and no skins for clothes or at least your own solar and battery system.

And you forgot to mention the EPEAT gold standard award!

lol, I would be concerned if it used 20% more power with the same performance. Since the iMac will complete some tasks twice as fast, it will use less power.

It's also about heat and noise. More power used means more heat produced, which can (but not always) mean more noise.
