Does anybody know what panels are used for the 20" and 24" new 08' iMacs ? The specs for the 24" panel are 178/178 degrees viewing angle, which probably means it's a PVA or MVA, considering IPS screens are only 20" or 23"... But the 20" panel specs are 160/160, which is standard for TN screens.... wtf ?! are they really using TN's ?

It gets even stranger... the Austrailia specs show the 20" at 170/170:

There is an IPS screen at 24" - the LG-Philips S-IPS LM240WU2 (used in the NEC 2490WUxi display). But I suspect the iMac uses the much more common S-PVA panel from Samsung (LTM240M2 used in almost all high end 24" LCD displays). Samsung lists the viewing angle as 178/178 for their LTM240M2 equipted 244T monitor (http://www.samsung.com/ca/products/monitor/lcd_digital/ls24brbabxaa.asp).

I seriously doubt, after having an IPS panel in the last iMac, that Apple would suddenly go to a TN panel. I suspect the change in viewing angle has more to do with the glass coating than the panel itself. I would expect that it's the same as the last iMac, or maybe a newer high-end PVA panel.
Calling TN panels "crap" is a bit of an overstatement. Sure IPS panels are generally nicer, TN has its advantages in faster refresh speeds and lower price and most people don't notice the dithering.
I'm hoping Apple stuck with the IPS panels in the old iMacs, as those were nice displays, but I'm betting 90% of iMac users wouldn't notice.
Do you even know what you are talking about? Or just pulling figures out of your behind?
TN screens have much narrower viewing angles. 160 is considered pretty good.
There's a reason i said that, mainly because on my 17" iMac I can't really watch dark movies when i'm in my bed. The viewing angles are really bad in my personal experience.
Anyway, the 20" uses a TN-based panel according to another post here at MR. Let's hope this one has better viewing angles in real use.
True to an extent, but the viewing angle always gives you the right information. The 178 -> (S)IPS / xVA, 160 -> TN rule hits the spot 99.9% of the time.
I agree with posters who wrote people shouldn't freak out when they hear the letters 'TN'. Virtually all laptops, for example, have TN panels (even the ultra expensive high-class ones) and noone seems to be too worried about it.

Anyway, I'm wondering what kind of display the 24 inch imac is. Anybody have any guesses?

I'm guessing its either a S-PVA panel by Samsung or an LG-Phillips S-IPS panel gauging by the view angle, ruling out a TN screen for the 24". No way to concretely tell until someone tears one down
However, maybe those who have picked up a 24" can help to narrow down the guesses.
Try viewing a couple of colored screens (blue, red etc) head on first, then move your angle of view to the side, if its PVA the color you're looking at should change a little (say from red to slightly pinkish). If its an S-IPS panel, iirc, the color should be quite consistent.

IMO, I like the new imac design, while I agree that apple should have given the option of matt, I'm okay with gloss and will prob order one sight unseen to replace my 5+ yr old heavily Jury-rigged PC
