new iMacs...

...any word on when these might be landing? most people can predict iPhone/iPad/iPod renewals, since they are on a yearly cycle... but what about iMacs?

current unibody 13" (late 2008) MacBook is starting to struggle now, so i'm very interested in getting a 27" beast, but reluctant to get one if a new one (possibly with a new design) is imminent...
 
Well the iToys can be predicted as they follow a yearly cycle (we'll have to see about the iPad, but the rumours indicate this).

The iMacs are going to require some guess work. There are hints at a MBP update coming soon, but the correlation seems to be weak between MBP and iMac updates.

iMac was last updated in July, so about 6 months ago, and the last new design was October 2009. My gut feeling (so not a great indication) is the iMac will get a spec bump next, not a redesign. Having said that, the processors are already reasonable (i3/5/7) so we will be looking at a small increase. The hard drives are unlikely to change as 1Tb is pretty standard. RAM is at 4Gb, maybe the top spec 27" will come with 8Gb as standard. The iSight webcam may well be rebranded as a Facetime Camera!

When may this happen? God knows. Maybe with the MBP (hopefully soon) maybe on its own in a couple of months, maybe with Lion in the summer? Sorry I can't be more helpful than that!
 
Most seem to think a new design is doubtful. Just get it now if you want it. I just ordered an i7 and I'm happy to have freed myself from sitting in the eternal waiting room.

iMac was last updated October 2010, that's when they put the i7 as an option

Didn't know that. Now I feel even better about having just ordered an i7. It's only been out 4 months!

The 2009 27" iMac had the first BTO i7
 
The current design of the iMacs came out in October 2009. They were spec bumped in July 2010. They are probably due for another spec bump in Q2 2011, but don't expect a new design until at least Q1 2012. If you look at the redesign cycles of iMacs and MacBooks, you'll see that they change every 2 years and 4 months or so, if not longer. That would put an iMac redesign in the mid-Q1 2012 range.

Nope, doesn't seem to be any documented updates in the Mac Rumors buyer's Guide post 07/27/2010. You can check yourself. Nada ;)

Even if it was updated though, if it were just a minor BTO change (for example, adding a higher clocked CPU), it wouldn't count as a major refresh.
