I traded in an old iPhone for a gift card today at the Apple Store. A few things were different this time. First, the Specialist prompted me to scan a QR code on her point of sale (POS) device. When I did, an App Clip was opened and asked me to share certain information to proceed with the trade-in process.
It asked me to share name, Apple ID, payment information, phone number, and address. It allowed me to customize which data points I wanted to share. However, due to a time crunch, I did not have the opportunity to read everything and just pressed the blue "continue" button.
I'm not worried my information will be stolen per se, but I couldn't find any documentation online about this new trade-in process and how that information is handled by employees and Apple. When the trade-in was complete, I was handed a gift card and nothing else. No notification or indicator on my iPhone 15, email, or Apple ID about the "link" or "sharing" of this information was complete.
The past trade-in process included the Specialist entering the device's serial number into the POS, inspecting the device, and the customer entering his or her name, address, and email.
Has anyone else experienced the new in-store trade-in process?
Also, Apple has new gift cards that don't include stickers anymore nor a built-in envelope.
