New Internal Hard drive not being recognized

I've got an mid 2008 Imac dual core 3.06 500GB. I bought a Barracuda XT 2 TB to put into it as my hard disc is nearly full and it's got a faster transfer rate.
The problem is, the computers not recognising or showing this new drive and I don't if it's a compatibility problem or it's just a dead one. Any thoughts would be greatly appreciated.

Did you format it correctly in Disk Utility?
