New iPad (2017) Already $20-25 Off at Best Buy

Best Buy has already started to sell open-box iPads as Certified Refurbished for $20-25 off. That was quick. Guess folks are already returning them. Obviously, the 1-yr Apple warranty is still good. Not a bad way to save some money if you're willing to wait a week for free shipping.
I'll be returning my $379 refurbished iPad Air 2 128GB Wifi to get the refurbished new iPad 128GB Wifi for $404 instead. I was ok saving $50 over the new iPad and getting the better screen but older processor, but the recent battery life tests show a 5-6 hour advantage to the new iPad. That's worth $25 and forgoing the better screen to me.
 
20 or 25 dollars more fore a true new ipad, I would rather pay. Some people like to use ipad or phone in toilet DAILY just like what I am doing in a public toilet now, enjoy your new ipad.

This isn't indicative of device actual sales at all as people usually return a device because they didn't even need it but somehow think they do when we just mention it in conversation. Source I work for BestBuy.
 
If you really want to save $20, buy it through the Apple education store online and order for pick up. The online store doesn't ask for edu ID. No way I would settle for an open box device to save $20.

My theory on open box items from Best Buy is to make sure you thoroughly test It within your two week period of owning the iPad. A lot of times Geek Squad is supposed to inspect the item before they place it back on the shelf for resale, and they don't, and I've had accessories missing from the package before and/or a faulty device. But otherwise, I agree with your previous idea to save money by returning your iPad.

In Hong Kong, I see people talk about they would randomly pick and call to check student ID/educational place ID, actually it is illegal to pretend to be student/work in educational place in Hong Kong so people normally don't take the risk over here. I don't know about USA.

And actually people talk about if you really call the Apple hotline, they are willing to offer discount like 5% for more expensive stuff like imac, I never try but that is what people said in local forum.

Apple Store online orders ship for free. I don't think Apple will inconvenience the customer by holding the order, phoning and asking for an ID to be emailed.

Worst case scenario is Apple cancels your order. This isn't a big deal like an adult using a child Octopus card.

A big deal or not depend on if that Apple staff or the staff manager take it seriously. A person can be in jail for sure using child octopus and unluckily meeting a station manager taking it very seriously.

Best Buy currently has the better student promo. I just ordered one yesterday. $100 off any iPad if you buy AppleCare+ with it. (So basically you're just getting AppleCare for free).

If you're signed up for their college discounts, you'll get the promo code in your email.

1. Buying online for store pickup will show the iPad at $100 less...i.e. $229.99 for the 32GB 2017 WiFi.
2. Apple Care shows up as $99.
3. Tax applied to iPad only, not the Apple Care service.
4. Nothing on the order details says anything about a coupon being used.
5. Picking up from store will give you a generic paper with iPad listed only.
6. Call Apple, request refund for Apple Care, they'll ask for screenshots of BB order page, serial #, refund can be sent via Direct Deposit by giving your bank info...takes 2 weeks.

Total cost $230 + tax on just the $230. My total came to $246.09 and I've already received confirmation of pending refund in an email.

Just a couple items I wanted to mention with regard to the Air 2 vs 2017 comments we saw last week. I had the chance to own an Air 2 for a week just before picking up the new iPad.

1. The battery lasts noticeably longer. It's almost hard to accept seeing 88% when I feel like it should have been in the 70's.

2. The WiFi is improved. For me, it's dramatic. On 5 Ghz AC, the Air 2 would almost stall at times before loading a web page. I had a 6S Plus next to it that would load consistently faster. I'm not far from the gateway, but it is just a Comcast all in one. Even still, the new iPad has no problems even beating the iPhone in page loads.

Geekbench 4 also shows 2560 for single thread vs 1810 on my Air 2. I've seen a few sites and folks say they couldn't tell the difference between the two...or the Pro for that matter! Well. I notice it. Switching, opening, and generally moving around the OS feels snappier and smoother to me.

This wouldn't be proper if I didn't bitch about stuff tho, right?

The lack of a laminated display makes text harder to read, especially thin black text on white backgrounds at a dim brightness. It def makes the iPad feel cheap and toylike.

It's also extremely warm in color temp and this makes images look dirty to me.

Finally, I think seem to be having some eye strain problems with the new iPad I did not have with the Air 2. It's almost like a burning sensation.

Anyway, hope this helps some of you.
