Apple still sells more iPads (13.08M) than Macs (5.37M). However, iPad sales have dropped compared to previous years - Q1'17 13.08M vs Q1'16 16.12M.

That said, I don't think there were any new iPads released in Q1'17 (October - December 2016) whereas Q1-16 saw the release of the iPad Pro and iPad mini 4.
Thanks for your helpful insight it's appreciated .

IMO the whole notion that people are losing interest in tablets is based on the flawed premise that most people are going to replace them every two years like with a phone, when in reality it's a lot longer. I think you'll see the sales even out and maybe even go up over the next few years (especially with the availability of a cheaper iPad).

It probably wasn't until about year 3 of the iPad that they be came really common. As someone who's kept a 3rd generation iPad for 5 years and is now looking to upgrade myself, I think now is when you are going to start seeing mainstream users replacing their first tablets when many people have replaced their smartphones twice in that time.

This is not my personal opinion, look at google trend data in last 90 days:

https://trends.google.com/trends/explore?date=today 3-m&q=ipad
With new ipad announcement, only the announcement day google search number has been little bit higher than normal daily number, even the second day is already back to normal range.

Let's look at google trend 5 years data:
https://trends.google.com/trends/explore?q=ipad
Simple: keep dropping in pretty fast speed

Look at iphone trend in 5 years:
https://trends.google.com/trends/explore?q=iphone
very stable with big spark for every new iphone comes out.

Ipad vs Ipod for 2004 to now:
https://trends.google.com/trends/explore?date=all&q=ipad,ipod
See? Very similar trend, keep dropping until no one remembers. Just Ipod happened much earlier but the pattern is exactly the same.

I would not depend on Google for anything, sparky.

With all the iPad Pro ads coming in it seems more like Apple is replacing the mac with iPads.

I'd love to buy an iPod Touch 6G on top of my iPhone, iPad and MBP - the prices for RAM upgrades are completely ridiculous though (twice as much as for iPhones + iPads).

It's definitely Tim Cook's goal. He was quoted that he ultimately see's iPad replacing the PC. And if you look at Apple's marketing standpoint, with all these new commercials, they truly do want to utilize the smart keyboard with iPad Pro to be a replacement. Ultimately, I think that has a long way to go, and everybody will vary based on what their needs are. But I do agree Apple wants the iPad to be a primary source.

This is Tim`s marketing

Do the same thing for Macs, are they going anywhere soon no. Google search data isn't a representation of if a product are dying

Why are fanboys such as yourself so offended by a discussion of these sorts? It is disgusting and quite frankly gotten old. If you cannot remove your immature emotions and contribute to a topic do us all a favor and don't post.

I wasn't offended, I could care less. I was trying to say that Google Search Data has little correlation to a companies support of their products. Also don't speak for other people, as it's disgusting and quite frankly has gotten old. If you cannot handle someone disagreeing with another person then maybe your not ready to be speaking in a online forum.

About what I expected from you... Oh, and fyi, given the fact you were trying to downplay your emotional response the correct phrase should have been "couldn't care less".

May I suggest you speculate less and look at actual sales and earnings numbers more?

I.e. Apple's 2016 Q4 earnings report:
http://www.businessinsider.com/apple-q4-2016-earnings-2016-10

iPad revenue has been around 10% for several years now:
IMG_8592.PNG

HOWEVER, they're still bring in around $5,000,000,000 a quarter in revenue:

No, it's not as much as it has been in years passed, and yes, it is dwarfed by iPhone sales, but MANY tech companies would still LOVE to have $5 BILLION in revenue in a quarter.

I updated my post, but by all means continue to pick nits instead of understanding or addressing the overall gist.

Drop 19% in a year is a fact, not picking anything out to show. Not single data showing ipad is growing.

And we'll see in the next two quarters if the release of a $329 iPad will help boost iPad sales.

Guaranteed. Get them in the Walled Garden and they rarely leave. The 2017 iPad will be a big player in helping Apple regain some classroom traction as well. No one is forced to use an iPad. It's easy to kick Apple. When your the big kid on the corner there is always someone trying to push you off the curb. Apple's installed base is huge. They don't simply use phones and iPads. From services to streaming, Apple has their fingers in just about everyones pies. This device is the beginning of streamlining the product line. iPad Mini, iPad, iPad Pro. By the end of 2017 Apple will have a market cap well over 800 Billion, and this iPad will bring NEW users into the Walled Garden for a long time. :apple:

I would not agree. The thing is that people don't upgrade that often, because there is no real need anymore. My Mom's iPad Mini 2 bought at launch did everything she wanted which is news apps, web browsing, YouTube and casuals games. She traded it for new iPad because it was starting to have issues with screen and charging port. If it was still working she would have kept it. My brother's wife has iPad Air and she is not sure if she needs to upgrade to the new iPad. And there are many people like that out there.

The new iPad is exactly for people like them. Also who were you disagreeing with you didn't quote anyone?

While I agree in the inevitability of the iPad losing steam, I feel it's a lot more likely to see a revival than the iPod - whether by way of a drastically improved model, or new, interest generating features.

I think while we may see the end of the iPod in the next couple years, the iPad will linger on for a substantial amount of time, even if diminished.

The iPod hasn't gone anywhere. It is just now an iPod, a phone and an internet communicator.

As far as the iPad goes they took a step in the right direction by making a cheap model. What I would like to see is them add pencil support and the smart connector so all iPads can use the keyboard. If I had kids growing up I can easily see buying them a low end iPad and my kids growing up never really ever experiencing using a laptop.

So I don't see tablets and iPads ever going away they still have their uses.

I think the idea that people hold onto iPads longer than phones might be right on target. My wife just got a 7+ and told me she does not need an iPad anymore. That last part is anecdotal but the phablet market I am sure eats into the iPad profits as well I believe.

In my opinion iPads have a software issue, not a hardware issue...

Missing software features to make it a true workhorse (for me and many of my colleagues):
- Screen Recording API (to be used in conference apps)
- longer period of time in which background apps can utilize CPU, so that this does not happen: IMG_0686.jpg
- Alternative App Stores
- Same App Side by side (compare / edit two Word Documents at once i.e.)
- Offline Backup Feature without a Mac / PC (for example via Lightning Dock or WIFI to NAS)

The iPod hasn't gone anywhere. It is just now an iPod, a phone and an internet communicator.

What you are saying is how apple charges much more for pro.
