I don't get really excited on a personal level by new iPads. Even Macs are borderline. I am definitely more interested in new iPhones, and hopefully better usability in iOS on the iPhone. But I have at least one or more of every category in iPod, iPad, iPhone, Mac, Watch and even Beats in our household. Interestingly my iPad (Pro) is newer than my Macs, and also gets a lot of use. It's a little blurred as I use my Mac (well, at least one of them) and iPhone for work, but the iPad certainly is just as much loved if not more.

The iPod was replace by the iPhone. What's replacing iPad's? Nothing at this point. The issue is that many people already own iPad's and they don't update them frequently. My kids since use an Ipad 2.
Internally, it's being canabalized by the 12" MacBooks and the larger iPhone Plus models.

Externally, it's suffering loss from competition making fully computer windows 10 tablets, such as the SP4 modeled tablets from Samsung and Asus.

In the education and corporate sector it is dying to chromebooks as well as m-series fanless windows 10 cpu tablets.

By the way I don't hate ipad or Apple, actually I am going to buy one of these ipad 2017 for my parents for them to watch TV show. I just want to discuss about the ipad/Apple economics.
It shouldn't matter if you hate Apple or not. Good information is good information, thank you for that.

I would not agree. The thing is that people don't upgrade that often, because there is no real need anymore. My Mom's iPad Mini 2 bought at launch did everything she wanted which is news apps, web browsing, YouTube and casuals games. She traded it for new iPad because it was starting to have issues with screen and charging port. If it was still working she would have kept it. My brother's wife has iPad Air and she is not sure if she needs to upgrade to the new iPad. And there are many people like that out there.

I live the same scenario. After 10.2 her Air 1 simply became frustrating. I set up her (Mom) new iPad last night, and it's exactly what I expected. She could care less about laminated screens. The extra weight is actually helpful for her. People should not under estimate Apple's Target Consumer for this device. It's from 3 to 103. I'm no fan of Apple's current Executive Team, but I have to hand it to them. By streamlining this line up (don't be shocked to see the 12.9" go the way of the Mac Pro) they have extended the iPad's life for a long time, and are creating "Super Cycles" for it. :apple:
 
I bought today for my parents and setup for them. I feel the screen is same as or as good as my wife air 2 and i dont feel the weight different. I feel it is faster than the air2. I use the air2 few times a week for years. Yes there is the air gap but i only can tell when i seriously check it out in apple store, when i use it I dont feel any different than air 2 other than this new ipad is faster.
 
I think the idea that people hold onto iPads longer than phones might be right on target. My wife just got a 7+ and told me she does not need an iPad anymore. That last part is anecdotal but the phablet market I am sure eats into the iPad profits as well I believe.

Yeah. I'm a retired S/W engineer so I know a lot of tech people who will always upgrade to the latest and greatest whether they "need" to or not. But outside of them, the vast majority that I know are not interested in dropping several hundred dollars on a new tablet every few years unless what they have is broken.

But the iPad is still king-of-the-hill in the tablet market and the Samsung S3 won't be enough to dethrone it. And yes, the Surface line (along w/other Windows offerings) will continue to eat away at the Apple lead.

Does that mean Apple can't do more with the iPad with software and hardware improvements? Of course not!

The market may continue to shrink, but there will be a place for tablets.

For some things, it really does it well.

Even when foldable displays hit the market and blurs the line between phones and tablets even more, I still see a tablet market still.

The iPod hasn't gone anywhere. It is just now an iPod, a phone and an internet communicator.

As far as the iPad goes they took a step in the right direction by making a cheap model. What I would like to see is them add pencil support and the smart connector so all iPads can use the keyboard. If I had kids growing up I can easily see buying them a low end iPad and my kids growing up never really ever experiencing using a laptop.

So I don't see tablets and iPads ever going away they still have their uses.

The iPod is diminished and abandoned to a tiny, lonely section categorized under "Music" on Apple.com. While the iPhone has the features, it's not an iPod. It did, however, all but kill the iPod. To say they're one in the same is just inaccurate.

What you're saying is that you think you should get the top end features at the budget, stripped down price. Not going to happen. Want the features? Pay for them.

Tablets, as they are today, will remain for a significant time period because they've quite simply defined a portion of the tech sector. That isn't something that will just die out if a single company fails to innovate. You have Apple, Microsoft, Samsung, and others all making tablets on a yearly basis, and unless all of them, along with the smaller brands, suddenly stop creating tablets? The market will persist, even if slightly diminished.

The iPod came about as a media player - strictly - and served that purpose for several years. The market eventually diminished, but only due to other markets cannibalizing it - IE, the smartphone and tablet industries. You see the transition in things such as the iPod Touch, which you could view as the missing link of sorts in the market evolution.

The tablet market currently has stagnant growth, but also stagnant innovation - we have computer range power, advanced styluses, and a variety of renditions of keyboards for various tablets. There's not really much in the way of new and groundbreaking features, and now that many tablets are shipping with higher power processors and more RAM, they're lasting far longer for a consumer - much like a PC would. These both contribute to the market's growth slowing drastically after what was a huge rush of growth with the introduction of the iPad and the subsequent tablet market.

That being said, the tablet market will die out when a similar, but more innovated and useful market emerges. What that will be? None of us can really say. Perhaps analytics can shed light on it by viewing new technologies that are currently ramping up, but it will come down to future marketing, much as the iPad's initial success did.

I just check the most expensive version of the pro...didn't know it is that expensive lol. The big one is around 340% price of the 32gb 2017 LOL
