Greetings all, longtime reader here and I just bought a new iPad from Amazon for $250.00 and was wondering as a first time iPad owner, for those of you that own one, how is it? Mine arrives tomorrow and I'm excited. I plan to use it solely for web browsing and maybe some light photo touch ups, nothing too cpu or gpu taxing.

What apps do you all recommend, are there any "must have" type apps? Does the apple app store have Adobe lightroom or anything similar? Sorry about the noob questions but I'm excited as all heck, I bought the new 2019 with 32gb wifi. I do realize the only difference I think from last year's model is just the new ipadOS software and screen size, and the cpu is very old, but from the videos I've seen the additional 1gb ram does make a difference and so I'm hoping someone with a similar spec'd iPad can chime in to give me some tips/advice?

The new iPadOS software is supported on devices released all the way back in 2014 (Air 2) and onwards. Apple’s marketing got a lot of people confused apparently by presenting it as some kind of a feature of a new iPad. The real differentiating feature compared to the previous model is the support of the Smart keyboard- hence that 0,5” size increase.

Otherwise, congrats on your first iPad, I’m sure you’ll enjoy it for years to come, don’t worry about cpu too much. Lightroom and PS Express are both available for iPad and I find them sufficient for basic photo editing tasks. Tons of alternative apps as well. The app ecosystem is one of the best things about iPad.

Congratulations and enjoy your upcoming iPad. I’ve read a couple times that Affinity also makes some cool products for photography- maybe check these out as well or start with the Adobe stuff.

Waiting for Apple products to arrive in the mail is a great experience. My wife and I do this every year or so when we upgrade our iPhones. :p

My iPad is my most used Apple device. I’m using it now to write this via a Bluetooth keyboard.

I use Kindle, Apple Books, and Apple News to read. Safari for Macrumors. Notability with the Apple Pencil to take notes during class, work, church. I use iAWriter for a notepad when I want the text in the middle of the screen (typewriter mode). Apollo for reddit. Voice Record Pro for recording meetings (I’m asked to do this now and then).

I use an iCarez Matte screen protector for my iPad mainly to make the Apple Pencil feel more like paper but also cuz I like using my iPad outside sometimes.

I usually stick with Apple cases as 3rd party cases can make it a bit more bulky.

I make sure to have a charging cable at work, home, next to the TV, and near my bed so whenever I want I can plug in.

Enjoy your new iPad! It is my most used device, and as time goes on, this only increases.

I was thinking of getting this for my Mom for Mother’s Day or just because since her Samsung Tablet has cracked and I’m sure she’ll enjoy this iPad. She only plays games and goes on Facebook, so she doesn’t really need an all powerful iPad. For the price, I think it’s well worth it. I hope you enjoy yours!

It really is a nice, value tablet. It's what I'd get for my mom if she didn't already have a Pro 9.7 (which still performs very well to this day).

The iPad 7 is an amazing value. My last iPad was a pro 10.5. I sold it when it developed the infamous white spot. I then went without an iPad for a year. Bought the 7 when it was on sale for 229. Only thing I miss from the pro is the quad speakers and that’s it. The 7 seems just as fast, the screen on the 7 is still excellent and the battery life has been amazing! I can see the 8 getting the A12 or A13 and 4gb of ram this year. If it does I can probably sell this for around 150 and pick up the new one!

I upgraded to the 7th gen from old air 2 due to battery aging and contrast issues during dark scenes in videos.

its been great, the size increase is welcome.

Maybe but then the Air would need a big update or to be discontinued. The A12 in the Air vs the A10 in the base model is the biggest differentiator between the two iPads.

I really doubt that. It's not going to surpass the current Air model which is meant to be the midpoint between the entry model and the Pros. I would predict that the 8th gen iPad stays with 3 GB of RAM and upgrades the processor to an A11. An A13 and 4GB would put it nearly on par with the current Pros for like half the price. In our dreams!
