My wife's purchased a new iPad Air directly from Apple. It arrived today but we could not get anything to display when we plugged the charger in. After I plugged it into my Mac, a prompt came up that the iPad was in Recovery Mode and needed to be restored.

I haven't seen this before (Recovery Mode, yes. On a new Apple device, no). Has anyone seen that before. Any reason to be concerned?

Well...that doesn't sound normal.

Apple are good with returns but if you have an issue after 14 days then you will probably get a refurb which is not what you bought.

I would set it up, use it to make sure she actually likes the device (rather than say a new M1 iPad Pro 11 inch). ...but I would be tempted to return it (esp if there is any more strangeness at all).

Ok, thank you. Good to know about the 14-days. She's getting it setup now. If there's any other weirdness, I'll contact Apple and start a return.

Was the device possibly stolen previously?
