I just had the battery in my old iPad Air 2 replaced. I had it replaced by a 3rd party repairer.

When I got home I connected it to the CoconutBattery, and then to my amazement there were 377 Cycles on the new battery and the design capacity was on only 65%.

My old battery only had almost 250 cycles and a design capacity of 89%

I have been testing the battery for a few hours and it does not seem to have changed anything. It still uses a LOT of battery when I play, ex. 45 minutes of Mario Run cost almost 40% on battery. I do not know if it is normal?

I contacted the technician, who promised that it was a BRAND NEW battery and that he only used quality batteries, even though they were not original. He did not know about CoconutBattery, but he did not believe it measured correctly.

So my question, is it a chance that CoconutBattery is measuring incorrectly, or have I been scammed?

Brand new Battery or not?

I would say it’s very likely not a new battery. While I’ve seen coconut battery misread battery health in terms of design capacity, I have not seen it ever misread cycle count so that battery almost certainly has 377 cycles on it. I would reach out to the repair tech again and demand a refund or replacement with an actual new battery.

Looks like best case: a mistake was made, worst case: you got ripped off.

Contact the person who replaced the battery and tell them what you found.

That was what I feared. I had hoped that there was a chance that Coconut measured incorrectly. Okay, well then I have to contact him again tomorrow. I paid 155 Dollars for the service, so it just MUST be okay.

The problem with his type (the repairman) is that he only believes in himself, and not in any software "I have downloaded from the internet"

I just should have bought a new iPad 2020, and paid the small amount extra.

It is hard to say if it is an old battery or not.

It is quite possible that the battery supplier copied the battery stats from an initial battery to make sure it reports correct data to iOS, but it is hard to say. Even outside of a “new” battery though you don’t want an “old“ battery as batteries wear out due to age as well. If the 2016 date of manufacture is accurate in your picture that means the battery would be 5 years old. Even if new I wouldn’t want a battery that old.

This is why I just stick to Apple for the battery replacement. $99 at Apple in the US and you don’t have to worry about ending up with a 5 year old battery or one with use on it already.

Looks like the replacement battery is not new. Try to get a fresh battery from the same shop. Either way don't spend more money on getting the battery changed. Upgrade to a new iPad

I have made a screenrecord where you can see my iPad go from 53% to 14% in 37 minutes (I have put the clip fast forward)

I opened a random page in Safari, and let a gif run. I lose 39% in 37 minutes, with is brand new battery.

Before I recorded the clip, I restored the device, and started from scratch and there are no apps installed in the background.

What are your thoughts on what you see?

Watch the clip here:

@LogicalApex

Have paid $ 50 more for a non-original battery. Unfortunately, we do not have any Apple Stores in Denmark.

Coconut can be wrong on wear, not on cycles, this battery is older than the one you replaced and even if new the price is a total ripoff, especially for an old and now slow iPad like the air 2....

An update.
I went back to the shop the next day, and talked to the repair man, and he wanted to change the battery again, but he stubbornly insisted it was a new battery. The funny part is that after I called, he had already ordered a new battery. Conclusion, he knew I would come back - he knew the battery was not good enough.

My theory is that he only had a single battery lying around, he probably knew well that it was not brand new, but he hoped it worked better than what was sitting in. If it goes then it goes.

He had not expected that I had checked the battery with an external software. Such a scammer.

But the end of the game: He has replaced the battery and now it looks much better and I can feel a noticeable difference. Then my Air 2 can handle one more ride in the manege.

good that at least now you have a new battery, hope he won't reuse your old battery with another client.... Anyway, $155 for replacing the battery of a tablet that is barely worth that money is an exorbitant price...

I hope he has learned his lesson.
Yes, agree it is expensive. But everything is a bit expensive in Denmark, compared to other places. The price I paid is roughly the average price everywhere in this country.
