I currently own the original iPad Air and use it a lot for browsing, Outlook and so on.

I find the 9,7" screen a bit cramped. Would the new ipad air improve on that noticeably?

First. I don’t have the new Air, if its the brand new Air 4 Your talking about.

In 2018 I switch from iPad Air 1 (first gen. from 2013) to iPad 6gen and jumping from a A7 to A10 is huge. So Yes go for the Air. Otherwise if money is a concern, then there is also the new 8 gen iPad with 10.2 screen. All depends what your are planing to use your new iPad for.

Go with the iPad 8. You will notice the screen size difference and the A12 is a good processor.

I think you should just get the base model iPad. It’s still bigger than the iPad Air.

is there much difference in screen ‘feel’ between the new ipad and latest ipad air ?I’m reading that the base ipad lacks the laminated screen.

For such light usage the regular iPad 8th generation can suit your needs. The display is 10.2", which is certainly more screen real estate than 9.7". Or, maybe even a refurbished Air 3 which has the same internals as the iPad 8, but with slightly larger 10.5" laminated display, and thinner form.

It feels like a classic iPad. The screen is great. I went from a pro 10.5 to iPad 7 and didn’t miss pro motion or the laminated screen. To be honest it has better viewing angles and a lot less off axis color shift than the laminated screens from my experience.

Thank you for your replies - still haven´t purchased, but still feel the 9,7 is too small - but the Air 4th gen isn´t markedly larger/easier to use than the 10,2 iPad 8?

Well, your options are limited. The current iPad models offer three choices unless you take the big jump to the 12.9" Pro. There are other differences between the three iPads you can pick from, I suggest putting thought into what you use the iPad for so you make the right choice not just from display size standpoint, but considering all of the features.

Best action for you might be to go to an Apple Store, if that is available to you, and try out the different models yourself. See what you think after you've held each in your hands and used it for even a short time.

No stores anywhere near here, but thank you for contributing.

Maybe I need to go even bigger for something like the Macbook Air to get what I desire.

A bit strange they have both 10,9 and 11 inches. You´d think they would streamline stuff more.

After almost a month on the new Air: I was leaning towards the 10.2 basic iPad but I was given the Air for Christmas. A very nice gift. I think I would only miss the better stereo sound of the Air (rotates and truly "left and right") were I to step down to the base model.

Truly, I would have been extremely happy if I had been gifted (only) the 128 gb base iPad. I was actually considering one with cellular before this blue Air 4 showed up!

I just got my 8th generation iPad last night, and I love it. I had the iPad Air 2 until my dogs tail made it meet the marble tiled floor. The 8th generation iPad is larger and seems much faster with the A12 chip like my iPhone XR. I used the iPad for work all day, and as much as I hate working from home, I’d rather take the risk of COVID, I have to say it was very enjoyable laying on the couch doing work in basically sweatpants and t shirt until the dog decided to try and take up the whole couch. Still have 70% battery left. I also have an early 2015 MacBook Air which is awesome as well. Apple is far better than the competition and just work.
