I want to be able to do small edits to photos. Will I be able to edit these photos using an external drive once IPAD IOS is released? Or will I have to have the photos on the IPAD to be able to edit them and then save them back to the external drive. I'm trying to figure out how much storage space I will need on the new IPAD pro given that I have large Sony files. Even if I can edit the photos from the external drive, I still have to have a way to get the photos to that drive without having another computer with me.

Thanks for any help you can give.

Yes you would be able to edit photos directly in the external drive without saving it to the iPad and directly save the edited photos back to the external drive.

Thanks so much. Would I be able to get the photos on the hard drive initially without using the IPAD or a computer. I'm really trying to figure out how much space I need in the new IPAD pro.

I am not sure if I understood your question correctly but if you are saying without the edit can you get the photos on the iPad from your external drive, yes you can do that provided your iPad has adequate storage left.

As I have been thinking about it I don't think what I want to do is possible. I'd like to use the IPAD for just the editing off of the external drive without ever having the photos on the IPAD. However, I doubt that without another computer, I would be able to actually get the photos onto the external drive in the first place. In other words I have the photos on my SD card and somehow I would have to get them on the external drive without using the IPAD to do that which I think is impossible. Thanks.

On the Apple website page there is still an article with graphics and picture which shows a camera directly plugged into the iPad using the USB-C cable and you can even access photos directly from your camera on the iPad in iPad OS !

You could use the Files app in iPadOS to copy the files from the SD card to the external drive, assuming you have a hub were you can plug both in.

Thank you. This has answered my question. I don't have a hub but I certainly could get one.
