Hello,

I bought the new iPad Pro M4 on launch day, and upon activating and using it, I've realized that sometimes (randomly, or maybe 1 in every 10 swipes), the swipe-to-close gesture doesn't recognize my input, so I have to try a second (or maybe a third) time to close an app.

This issue occurs in almost all apps, but it is most common with Facebook, FlightRadar, and YouTube. I've been testing this iPad, and besides this issue, the touchscreen seems to work normally. I was using a screen protector, but I removed it thinking it was the cause, yet the problem persists.

It happens randomly, and I don't recall having this issue with my old iPad M1.

Is this a software issue, or should I be concerned? Have any of you experienced the same issue? It's difficult to visit an Apple Store because we don't have them in my country, so I'm kind of stuck.

Thanks in advance for your answers.

How do you swipe to close? Just swiping up from the bottom of the screen?
Are you in landscape or portrait?
I wonder if it has something to do with the relocation of camera and charging stuffs.
If it's general screen insensitivity to touch, absolutely return it before it's something that might get worse.

Yes, I just swipe up quickly from the bottom of the screen, like I used to do on my old iPad (from the lower border of the iPad itself). It works fine mostly all the time, but sometimes it doesn't respond or the page keeps scrolling. I only use it in landscape mode."
I haven't notice general insensitivity to touch!
Please help

Can you please guys check if some of your have observed this behavior in the new iPad?
Or if it's just my iPad that's acting this way?
So I'll try to send it to Apple
Thanks!

My iPad is also one week old, and it's the same model.
After swiping up to close Safari, for example, it works fine most of the time. However, occasionally, instead of closing the app, it detects that I'm scrolling up.
This issue occurs in other apps as well, but it's very random and I can't reproduce it consistently since it happens unpredictable (most of the times it detects I'm closing the app, sometimes I'm scrolling up, and others it doesn't detect any single input)

Please advice and help

Doesn’t happen on my M4 11”. Maybe you can try to capture a video of it (even if it’s inconsistent) and share with Apple Support since there aren’t stores near you.

Here's a video I captured showing the issue (swiping up and interpreting as scrolling instead of closing, other times not interpreting the gesture at all)

I can somewhat reproduce this (albeit inconsistently) in Safari. I believe this is related to you reaching the end of the web page. I never get this in Safari when I’m swiping home in the middle of a web page, but if you start to scroll down or scroll to the end of a web page and then try to swipe home, it sometimes happens. So, perhaps that’s the culprit? You also mentioned it happens in other apps like FaceBook and YouTube. I tried in YouTube and wasn’t really able to replicate it.

Yes, maybe it's my fault, or maybe I'm not doing the gesture correctly (maybe it's different on this iPad as they've changed the cameras position and other hardware, and I used to have an M1). I really don't want to find out that this is a hardware issue because I bought this iPad while on vacation in the US, and now I'm living in South America (there are no Apple Stores in South America except in Chile and Brazil, and they're very far to travel to!).
So my only option would be to send the iPad via FedEx or DHL to a relative living in the States for him to exchange it... So it would be a very long and costly process. I'd really prefer it to be a software issue...
If you could somehow replicate my issue, that gives me peace of mind...

Can confirm mine is the same, very inconsistent and only happens at the very end of a web page.
Thanks for replying! Yes, I've been checking these days, and it only seems to happen when I swipe up from the frame of the iPad (like I used to do with my old iPad), if I swipe from the display swipe line, it works normally all the time.

Do you think this is a hardware problem and I should return it? Or a software issue?

I'm pretty sure it's a software thing, i'm not even sure I would class it as a bug, it almost seems intentional to stop you closing a web page once you reach the bottom.
I only seem to be able to replicate the first time i hit the bottom, and i can swipe to close every time until i scroll back up and then down again.

Yo….ive had the same issue since day 1. Also using a screen protector but also tried without it. For the most part I felt that the issue didn’t happen with the glass protector or the glass protector was decfective. So I switched to another screen protector. But I’m running into this swipe issue again.
It’s exactly the same as you…….i don’t know if this is a hardware issue or software issue or the screen protector causing it.
I hate to be removing and replacing screen protectors all the time just to figure this out…

I also have a separate issue that I’ve been looking into but I can’t seem to figure out if it’s only me or someone else has it also. That issue is that several times a day when I wake up in the morning, tapped awake, want to work on the iPad. No matter how many times I tap the screen will not wake up. However, if I use the Siri hotword, or even if I tap the power button, the screen will wake up and then from there on I won’t have the staff to work issue until the next morning when the iPad has been sleeping overnight…
I would suggest you report these issues at feedback.apple.com, I had done the same, hoping with him enough reports Apple will pay attention to it.

I think it's a software issue because sometimes it works flawlessly, and other times it starts to act up. If I go to Settings - Accessibility - Touch Accommodations and toggle all the settings there on and off, it fixes the issue temporarily. I read about this on a Reddit post, and it helps for a while. Did you try this? I also don't think it's a hardware issue because I returned the first iPad and ordered a new one.
What are the chances of getting a defective second iPad?
I'll report this to Apple now.
