I just bought a 2021 12.9 iPad Pro but I am contemplating wether I should return them now that new iPad Pro’s are the on the horizon. I know, the M1 is already overkill but we’re tech nerds and we want to have the shiniest toy.

Mark Gurman and other leakers say new iPad Pro’s will be released late 2022. What do you guys think? Will the new iPad Pro’s come out later this year as the leaks say or the spring event of 2023, 2 years after the release of the 2021 iPad Pro’s? I think I’m leaning towards spring 2023. They also say the redesigned MacBook Air is also coming late 2022. I have a hard time believing Apple will release these two big products during the same event…

There's a chance it'll be October / November 2022 alongside the M2 introduction which is expected to start after WWDC this year.

M2 isn't going to be a very noticeable upgrade though and other rumours aren't giving us anything groundbreaking for the larger iPad Pro so I would enjoy my current iPad Pro M1 if I were you

You know as much as any of us regarding when the next iPad Pros will be announced. And you know as much as any of us with respect to what new features the next generation might bring. Based on rumors, probably next fall. Since the 12.9 just got a mini LED display, that likely won't change. Rumors suggest M2 and mag safe charging. Beyond that there will likely be some pretty minor spec bumps and they'll probably find some new feature to add to help market the product. It's April. If the next generation is announced in September it'll likely not be available till close to October. Nearly 6-months. IMO, chasing the next tech upgrade is a fools errand. There's always something newer, faster, shinier, flashier coming in the next generation. I suspect the 2025 version is the one for which to wait.

Those are leakers though. And the other thing it comes down to is M2 for what? Still so much power is unused.

Are you upgrading from a previous iPad or is this your first iPad?

If it’s your first, then the current one is plenty amazing already. If it’s an upgrade, consider what features attract you to the 2021 Pro, and if it’s time for an upgrade.

I have the 2020 iPad Air, so I’m not needing an immediate upgrade, but I do want Pro features like Quad Speakers. I can easily wait for the next Pro.

Every new Pro brings something beyond just a faster processor. The 2020 Pro had LiDAR and upgraded base storage and RAM, 2021 had Center Stage and 5G, along with more RAM.

So, a newer processor is only part of the story. There will always be something else improved. The question is, is it worth waiting?

I think it’s highly likely they’ll be out by the end of this year.

I wouldn’t worry. If for example the next iPad Pro comes out in October 2022, it is unlikely to feature any blow-away spec bump over the 2021 model. It will likely have M2 and 10-15% faster single core performance. Not a huge deal for you.

Yes, this is probably true about the processor, but it will have other improvements too. Apple never just updates the chip and nothing else.

Sure but how many folks actually cared about LiDAR on the 2020 Pro? The bump in storage and RAM to the base model was likely more significant for most.

Now we may see 256GB base and/or 16GB RAM across the board on the next iPad Pros. Those would certainly be nice. Worth waiting for someone who has a perfectly working iPad. If one needs a new iPad or an upgrade ASAP though, a discounted 2021 isn't bad at all.

Absolutely nothing wrong with the 2021 Pro, no debate. I doubt very many people valued the addition of LiDAR, just like very few people will likely care about the rumored wireless charging on the next Pro. It’ll be the features we haven’t seen rumors about that I’m curious about.

Wireless charging will be interesting. It sort of has that now, when you pair it with a Magic Keyboard and plug in the AC to the keyboard. Stick the iPad to the keyboard magnet and - charging, like a dock.

I assume there will be a new Magic Keybaprd, where the charging occurs at he Apple logo, as rumored, and not the smart connector? In that instance, it seems to not be a useful upgrade.

Again, until iPadOS is revamped, even slightly, to really take advantage of the M1, let alone an M2, there’s zero point in worrying about whether or not you might miss out. You’d be just fine with a 2018 iPad Pro at this point.

Let go of FOMO and just enjoy what you have. I’m still rocking a 2017 iPad Pro and frankly I only miss not having a USB-C port. The rest is just gravy. When iPadOS can take advantage of A12X/Z and M1/M2, I‘ll be right there with my wallet opened. Until then, there’s just no reason to try and keep up. Just my 2¢.

a fool's errand or a characteristic of man’s mind -that is making us cherish and revere life as it should be tomorrow rather than live and enjoy life as it is today - to which we all more or less succumb depending on our awareness of it.

I don’t even know what I want from the next iPad Pro. It already have pretty much everything I can think of, hardware-wise.
However, I do NEED proper external display support from iPadOS.

Maybe OLED or Mini LED on both?

Possibly give a higher base storage (at least maybe on 12.9)?

I don’t think higher base RAM would happen tho…

M2 processor (obviously)

I don’t think it will happen, but maybe move the camera to the top of landscape mode instead of portrait mode? Maybe at least on the 12.9 I could see that being considered… not sure how much better it would be than Center Stage though…

I do think an updated Magic Keybaord is on the horizon, if it won’t be this year, then maybe a following year when they make new sizes or something along those lines.

Maybe this year they release a new 14.5” size or something crazy, but I think that will be a couple years away.

Doesn't seem like a display change is happening soon based on current rumors.

M2 is first and foremost going to be designed for the Mac. The M1 Pro/Max/Ultra Macs already have 16-64GB RAM as base with 512GB or higher storage. If we get lucky, maybe Apple would throw us a bone and give the next MacBook Air M2/16GB/512GB base and the iPad Pros would follow suit (except with 256GB base storage).
