This is correct. It is being reported that the Pencil 2 won't work on older iPads and the Pencil 1 won't work on the new ones.
Because they both have completely different pairing and charge methods. The Pencil 2 is magnetic and sticks to the new iPad Pros to pair and charge. The Pencil 1 has a lightning port that it uses to pair and charge with the old iPads, the new iPads don't have lightning ports. Pretty simple.Wow! this surprises me. I'm dying to hear what the technical reasons for that are, there are reasons right.... oh my.
No I never charge my pencil with the lighting port on the iPad. Pairing, well OK, since the original pencil I believe has to be connected to pair. Still, maybe USB-C to lightning adapter...Because they both have completely different pairing and charge methods. The Pencil 2 is magnetic and sticks to the new iPad Pros to pair and charge. That isn't true. The pencil can be charged lots of different ways, not just by sticking it into the iPad. And technologically the usb to lightning adapter would be able to pair the devices perfectly. If they don't work together it's a transparent money grab by Apple. It's quite repulsive. I have no loyalty to Apple anymore.
Will the new pencil only work on the new iPad? I wonder if it can work on the iPhone??
if I get a usb-c to lightning adapter, can I use my current pencil with the new 11 inch ipad?
Thats a good point. It could in theory be charged by forcing customers to buy a dongle FOR THEIR PENCIL. hahaha.I get why the new Pencil won’t work with older iPads. But old pencil not working with new iPads seems like a cash grab. Shouldn’t you be able to pair using a USB-C to lightning adapter?
The 1st gen Pencil comes with an adapter for charging. Charging it via lightning port was for convenience. BUT there is no way to pair it to an iPad without sticking it in the lightning port.Thats a good point. It could in theory be charged by forcing customers to buy a dongle FOR THEIR PENCIL. hahaha.
But yea it could work, but much simpler to just make a dividing line. I get both sides to this, but I'm sorta in favor with the direction they took.
I still have the Apple Pencil I ordered from the Pro in a box unopened. I had planned to use it on the new 2018 but I guess not?
maybe apple has an Apple Pencil trade in program lol
I guess I could sell it??
Solution: Don't purchase. Vote with your money. Easiest way to show Apple you're unhappy with their design decisions. But we all know you'd rather complain and buy it anyway. That isn't true. Completely incorrect. I bought the 9.7, then the next year bought the 10.5, and I was planning on buying the new iPad again this year if I liked it enough... but I don't, so I'm not buying a new one this year.
