Got new iphone 7 and when I did a restore from old phone I lost the new phone number. I got it from freedompop, all set up with a new number, but I wiped it and then did a restore from icloud backup from old lame phone. Now it actually receives calls to my old number, but not to the new number that freedompop gave it. I want the new number. My imessages settings says waiting to activate, as does my facetime. What can I do to get this phone to have the right phone number?

In settings, tap your name at the top, which takes you to your Apple ID. The first section there takes you to phone numbers. Next to the "Contactable At" section, tap 'Edit' and add the number you want.

Unfortunately, it wants to send a verification code to that number and at this time, the phone thinks it has the number of my old phone and can't receive messages on the number that is supposed to be assigned to that phone.

That's really weird. The phone should read the SIM for phone number. Can you sign out of iCloud, then restart the phone? Once restarted, before signing in, see what phone number it thinks it has.
