I bought a new iPhone 3Gs for my wife as a Christmas present. I bought it from Apple's website and used her AT&T account info. I have the phone now but I'm confused about activating it...since I used her AT&T info when ordering does that mean I can just put the SIM card from her current phone into the iPhone and it will work or do I still need to take it into an Apple store?

Put her SIM in the new iPhone and connect to iTunes. It will activate the phone for you.

No you need to leave the SIM in that comes with the iPhone. When you activate the new iPhone it will transfer the account to the new SIM making the old one invalid.

It's very clear in the instructions to use the SIM that ships with the iPhone.

I seemed to have a small problem with MMS when my 3GS arrived.
I didnt use the simcard that came with it and I just popped in my old iphone 3G sim.
Call up AT&T and ask to make sure. If its true make sure you dont deactivate her old phone by accident and leave her wondering whats going on :D

Dumb question. I wanted to buy the 3GS for my wife as a surprise Christmas present. We are in a family talk plan under my name so I have access to her account information. If I order the IPHONE online, can she still use her old phone until Christmas morning when I give her the IPHONE and we activate it? Thanks for the help.

I'm doing the exact same thing you are. I ordered the iPhone using our current AT&T account info and so far her old phone is still working normally.

Yes. Her old phone will remain operational until after you have activated the new iPhone on her line of service.
