New iPhone and Windows - What do I do first?

Hi there. First post. I recieved my 8gb iPhone today and have spent a couple of hours reading the stickies in this forum but am still a little unsure of where to start so I'd appreciate a nudge in the right direction.

Firstly, my situation. I'm in UK using Windows Vista. I haven't installed iTunes and I haven't done anything with the iPhone apart from play with the emergency calls only screen. I don't want to enter into a contract with o2 and would like to use the pay and go 02 sim from my existing phone.

I had been told that Ziphone would be good to unlock and activate the iPhone but I'm wary of that now after my short time here. I would use Pwnage but the full release isn't out for Windows yet so what would you recommend I do in the mean time? Is there a safe way of unlocking and activating the phone so I can use it or should I just wait?

What does a Windows user like me do right now?

Any help would be just lovely. :p
 
First thing to do is put the phone in recovery mode and restore to 1.1.4 (it will say restore AND update if your on 1.1.2).

If you don't have access to a mac then I suggest iLiberty+ as the best way to go from www.ipluspwns.com.

You can pwn your phone with winpwn BUT you can't unlock it with winpwn yet and you would have to download BootNeuter through installer to do that.

However if your willing to give it a go you can pwn your phone then create a custom activated 1.1.4 firmware and then add iclarified to installer and install BootNeuter and unlock the phone that way. (remmeber if you do this the phone WON'T be unlocked until AFTER BootNeuter does it thing so any SIM card in the phone will not work and/or get error messages on the screen).

Really it is a case of how easy or mildly challenging you want to make it!

But definately AVOID ZiPhone! it is NOT safe - iLiberty+ works in a similar way to ZiPhone but IS safe so use iLiberty+ if you don't want to try beta winpwn.

If you do decide to use pwnage then do read the FAQ for important information about the process!

Is using iLiberty+ irreversible or could I later use winpwn, maybe when the full version is released?

Also, I just updated/restored the firmware using iTunes. Does this mean it is definately 1.1.4 because I can't/don't know how to check?
 
iLiberty+ is reversible using pwnage/bootneuter. In face once you run iLiberty+ you can use BootNeuter to change the bootloader back to 4.6 and unlock the phone right away.

You can even get iLiberty to add BootNeuter to the phone automatically if you tick it on the list.
 
I have succesfully "pwned" my wife's UK O2 iphone using WINPWN beta.

However, PLEASE NOTE THE WARNING THAT DATA MAY BE LOST. I lost all data in the process, so be sure to backup everything, including address book, pictures, etc. before PWNing.

I followed the tutorial at "http://www.iclarified.com/entry/index.php?enid=957"

The phone is unlocked using BOOTNEUTER, and is now working on a Pay-as-you-go South African Sim Card in South Africa.

Note that you need to be able to connect the phone to a WiFi network after PWNing to install the BSD Subsystem and iClarified Source for BOOTNEUTER.
 
Just a quick post to thank spinstorm again. I used iLiberty+ and it unlocked it perfectly. I'm sticking with it for a while before I get bored and come back to see what I can do with it.

Off topic here but... bit sneaky what Apple did with the headphone socket isn't it? Why would they want to stop people using their own headphones? Do they even sell branded alternatives to their rubbishy bundled sets or are they just being awkward because they can?

Doesn't matter, I ordered an adaptor from eBay for 2 quid. Shouldn't have to do that though.

I don't think it is a conspiracy. I think it was a genuine design oversight.

Apple were pushing boundaries and working to VERY tight deadlines to get the iPhone out the door.

They fixed this issue with the iPod touch and it will be fixed with version 2 of the iPhone I am sure.

If it isn't then I welcome you to come back after it is released and correct me. ;)

I'm back. Been using my iPhone happily enough. But I'm confused regards updates for the iphone firmware. I'm using a PC with Vista and every time I use iTunes it asks me to upgrade (2.2 at the moment). I have 1.1.4 currently. I always decline assuming it would affect my what I did with iLiberty+. Unfortunately most apps aren't compatible with older firmware so I'm a bit stuck.

What will happen if I let iTunes upgrade my firmware to 2.2? And if that is a bad idea, what are my options?

I struggled to understand the myriad of options originally so I'm a bit flummoxed right now and I'd really appreciate a little push in the right direction.

If you upgrade to 2.2, although all of your contacts and stuff will be backed up, all of your jailbroken apps and stuff will be lost, and your phone will become relocked, and you will need to jailbreak and unlock it again. However, it's now simple enough to unlock it now. I just use QuickPWN for Windows to unlock.

So, should I upgrade the phone to 2.2 first then use QuickPWN? Will this jailbreak and unlock the phone all in one? I'm not bothered about losing my current jailbroken apps as long as I don't lose my contacts.

You won't loose any of your contacts or anything as long as you backup your iPhone though iTunes first, which is the first thing you need to do.

When you download QuickPWN, it will ask you what you want to do to your phone. You just need to make sure that "Unlock Phone" is selected, and you're good. After it's jailbroken and unlocked, just connect the iPhone back to iTunes, restore from your backup, and all of your contacts and stuff are back.

After you upgrade to 2.2, just follow the tutorial at http://www.iclarified.com/entry/index.php?enid=1880 , and it gives you all the files and things that you need to know. I would suggest to keep your sim card in the phone though out the whole process though.

Hey. I never got back to you but it all worked a treat. Albeit slightly differently than the iClarified guide.

I think because I upgraded my firmware to 2.2 first, when I was following the guide, I couldn't do Step 2 because my iTunes was telling me to register my phone to unlock it. I was slightly worried I'd messed up but I went straight to Step 3 (or maybe I opened the firmware first - I forget now) and it all ran smoothly from there.

Now I can enjoy all the apps. I recommend Rolando and Labyrinth.
