New iPhone Battery Claims

Apple today announced that the iPhone will in fact offer 8 hours of talk time, 6 hours of internet usage, 7 hours of video, or 24 hours of audio playback. This is an increase from the previous claim of 5 hours for talk, internet, or video; and 16 hours of audio playback. Whether or not these claims turn out to be accurate, it does refute rumors that Apple was having a hard time getting the iPhone to last the 5 hours they had originally promised.

wow, that's the best iphone news i've heard in a while. 7 hours of internet. :eek: i only hope these claims are close to real life results.
 
Can't wait until the market opens. This is really good news.

Now bring on the AT&T service plan pricing.

All I need is for someone to write a business mileage tracking program and I'm all set.

Edit: The glass screen material worries me, however. The others are plastic.

If the screen is made from glass, won't it be far more prone to cracking (ie: when dropped)? Obviously, as with most iPods, the iPhone will be treated like royalty, but it will happen, it may be harder to scratch, but plastic doesn't crack as easily.

We will soon find out, someone will make a big rukus about their broken toy.
 
Dividing those numbers with 2 to get the realistic versions they actually don't look too bad. I don't know what to feel about the glass news though.

the motorola krzr's outer cover is made from glass. i've seen it, and i'm pretty surprised at how resilient and scratch-resistant it actually is.

I'm more worried about that fact that it is actually an all-in-one device. iPods have about 15 hours, phones about a couple of days, but now...if your mp3 player runs about of battery (ie: your iPhone) you'll be phone-less (also very bored and annoyed for forgetting to charge it up the night before).
 
Battery life is obviously great news.

Glass sounds elegant, gorgeous, and high-end, but they need to address the breakage issue so users will feel confident buying a phone with a glass surface. Phones obviously do get dropped regularly (small kids anyone?) or squeezed tightly in purses or briefcases.

Precisely, like eye glasses. Now, obviously they wont be lenses, so they wont be improving the optics, but eye glasses don't break when you drop them. The iPhone will have more weight to it, but I still don't think it will break unless it is dropped with some force at a bad angle onto cement.
 
I was figuring there would be some changes to specs before product launch. I was hoping, however, it would be a storage bump to 8 and 16 GB.

I don't think they'd want to do 8 and 16gb, but i am still hoping they change it to 4 and 16gb. I doubt they will, but they certainly still can.
 
I'm excited about the 'optical glass' but the mention of weight above.... Hmmm... Might add weight huh? I've not been to the site to see if they already changed the specs (weight)... Still, no problem. I actually prefer a device like that to have some 'feel' to it.

Yes, it would be nice if they ramped up the storage but I've not ruled that out yet. Those silly Apple tricksters!

If it makes the device heavier, it won't be by much. When I mentioned weight, what I meant was that the weight of the unit as a whole will create more force on impact than what would be if you dropped a pair of eyeglasses.
 
Great news! Apple exaggerates a bit the battery life on their products but not too much. iPod nanos have, according to Apple, up to 24h of battery life and the one I own lasts 20h without problem. So if it's not 6h of internet, it's 5. Very reasonable in my opinion :D

It's not so much that Apple exaggerates. I've actually performed iPod battery tests that got better battery life than Apple claimed. The thing is, to get that kind of battery life you need to tell it to play and then not touch it until it's dead, because using the controls drains battery.

i have a KRZR, it cracked...and scratched...and it has fingerprints. but on the other hand, i have gone through 12 phones in year so maybe its just me

and on the memory bump up...if they do anything i think it'll be 8 and 12

Well Apple played the conservative card on this one. The singular key feature of any smartphone is a good battery life, and if it has 2 hours of usage in real life then it'll get boycotted, no one will buy it.

So what they did is give a good low range estimate, then up the usage times to the 'absolute possible running times' (ie 6 hours on a MBP?). The hype-machine that is, will go into overdrive and spread forth the word to the world saying, "Apple made something fantastic, even better!".

I'm not so sure of that one. If you have two models of a phone, you'll want to differentiating them as much as possible, having a 8gb and a 12gb model is much small a 'value' gap. The nano lineup should be a good indicator.

So a line up of 4, 8, 16gb versions aren't unlikely, 12gb would be amount to having 3 x 4 gb SSD chips, which may not fit properly. 2x8gb would work very, very fine.

Come to think of it. Just like the :apple:TV, someone will hack it, buy a 64gb chip from samsung, and stick it into the iPhone. (drools).

:eek: i don't think you should buy an iphone. not if it's going to last a month (two?).
 
most of the 12 phones were pretty junky (LG c1300i, Motorola V551, SLVR, RAZR, SYNC) the SYNC was the worst of all, i couldn't get 1 full day of battery outa that thing, and it got horrible reception. don't worry, ill treat my iphone very nicely...:)

I don't have glasses or anything but does optic quality make a difference in the strength of the glass? Hopefully it will help with scratches at least....
