Getting a new iPhone, to save time, not sure what iOS version is on new iPhone (SE) so can you backup as current is on iOS 13, and is new iPhone is on 14, can the backup be used?

Suppose wider question, and maybe it has to, is if someone had an old iPhone with a Mac iOS of 10,11 etc and bought a new iPhone which would come with iOS 14, then it must be allowed? Otherwise you would have to start afresh?

Thanks

You can use an older backup on a newer device without an issue.

Longer answer: iOS will put placeholders for the apps to redownload upon restore but it will transfer photos contacts iCloud and account setup info oh and WiFi too. Generally, the backups push as much as it can to the new device. If something isn’t compatible it’s ignored. I haven’t hit that issue but there could be legacy 32-bit apps that will no longer work b
