Well I use my iphone when going to class and I use the included headphones. I keep the volume just below halfway. I have also used it in my car using a 3.5mm jack. Noticed that it some how remembers the volume settings. When I used my headphone it goes to 1/4ish like a had it. Then when I put it in my car it goes to full volume, like i use it. I thought this was kinda need. I havnt tried with different headphones though. Just thought i would throw that out there.

Yeah, ive noticed this too. Very cool, and very helpful, but not new.

I love discovering all these little things my iPhone can do. I think the most useful function has to be the volume plus lock function to hang up and lock the phone.

Your mac does the same thing.

Except that the iPhone seems to know the difference between a three-conductor plug (ie. regular headphones) and a four-conductor plug (ie. iPhone earbuds). Like the OP described, my iPhone goes down to about half volume when I plug the iPhone earbuds in for listening at work, then goes back up to nearly full when I plug in my tape adapter (via homemade plug adapter).

As far as I know Macs only adjust based on headphones/internal speakers. They can't distinguish between different headphones plugged into he headphone jack.
