new iPhone in next 6 months?

I've read some articles online about analysts thinking Apple might be forced to release a new iPhone in Nov. or spring '08 due to lots of complaints about the lack of 3G and not as many ppl buying iphones......what do you make of this speculation?

I really want an iPhone now, but I dont want to regret the purchase in a few months if a new one comes out, however, I know how Apple typically works and how they dont release new products more than once per year...so I am really torn on this one.

also, for those who own, is the EDGE web browsing really that bad?

Do you really think apple would really release a 2nd gen iPhone less than a year the previous one came out?

Buy now.


I've used EDGE from Chicago to the middle of the woods way up north in wisconsin, and i find it to be fast enough. Not as good as WiFi but it gets the job done.
 
i don't think they would, if iphones are selling well, why would they "double up" and take even more risk, sinking in more money for next gen and ditching money already spent? If anything they would add features than create a money pit (if that is the case)
 
The only difference between and analyst and my speculation is they call themselves analysts. Most analysts said that the touchscreen keyboard would fail and be horrible and its great.

Can you go to an Apple or ATT store? If so, turn off wifi and see how EDGE is for yourself.

If you can wait do so, if not you will be happy with your phone.

Steve Jobs outlined the reasons that they didn't use 3G and there has not been any major change in 3G technology to change that at this point. In regards to not many people buying. AT&T said it had more people buy iPhones in the first weekend then it has ever had buy any phone in it's first month.

So the answer to your first question is no, I don't see another phone within a year. I also definitely don't buy the iPhone Nano nonsense. A click wheel on a phone would be miserable and you couldn't have a smaller keyboard than what is on the iPhone.

Browsing on EDGE is not ideal, but I didn't have internet on my old phone, so it's clearly way faster than driving all the way home to use my computer. Having said that, sometimes it seems almost as fast as some cable connections I've been on...sometimes it's as slow as dialup...just depends on what kind of signal you're getting at that moment. I'm in range of WiFi most of the time anyway.

I love my iPhone. I would say buy now if you really want it.
 
I would be suprised that a new iPhone model would come out that quickly. I normally use the "mobile" version of most web sites (including MacRumors) because the screen is too small for full web sites and since you have much less data I find that Edge works extremely well.
 
Well the thing is after release there hasn't been a outcry for 3g, everyone is pretty happy with EDGE, I remember reading a article about how everyone is pretty happy with edge after release. Im sorry I don't remember where I saw it.

I would agree with that. I think the smaller size and longer battery life outweigh the difference in speed between 3G and EDGE. I'm really pretty happy with it.
 
I think some of these analysts are smoking crack. I purchased two 8GB iPhones last week (one for me, one for the wife) and both of us love them. Yes, Edge is slow, but it is definitely usable, and I find myself on a Wifi network more than I find myself using Edge.

People. Apple is not going to lower the price of the current iPhone. If Apple did annouce a "Nano iPhone" it would most likely be a phone with an iPod fully integrated with no web browser/network connectivity.

There were tons of people in the Apple Store (The Gateway in SLC) when I purchased our phones last week. It sure did not look to me like Apple was hurting for business.

Get off the fence and get an iPhone if you really want one :) You will not be disappointed....
 
I've also heard from different articles and straight from someone's mouth in the industry that the device will be updated this fall. Whether that means software changes, more memory, or 3G or new form-factor (the last two being the least likely) I don't know.

The only reason I'm holding out is for more memory, and I wouldn't be surprised to see apple plop the new 16gb flash drive that's going to be in the next nano in the iPhone, I really hope they do.

I have the same feeling. The built-in WiFi makes up for it as well.
 
There is no doubt Apple is working on ver. 2 of the iPhone, as well as cheaper models. But they will not release one this soon. First, there is FCC regulations to contend with - which means they would have to pre-announce it now (like they did with the iPhone) and have it go through the approval process before making it available for sale. Second, the gen. 1 product has to sell in large numbers for there to be a viable business case to continue future products in that segment - announcing a replacement one month after release is suicide - Apple is not dumb.

The next announcement I expect from Apple will be January, at the earliest.
 
Instead of making an iPhone 2.0, come on Apple and update the original iPhone! I mean...no copy/paste, multiple Calanders, or MS office support...I'm dyeing here Apple!!! (Why do I somehow feel that Apple is going to leave us users out in the cold, and not update this phone anytime soon???)

Other than those few missing features, EDGE is the LEAST of my concerns. I'm on Wifi 99% of the time anyways.

It will be upgraded. And then some. No worries.

It's only been a month.

Touchscreen could easily work on a nano in landscape mode. And an iPhone nano could be a little bigger than the iPod Nano is now.

Give it camera, touchscreen, photo-browsing, and text and email support, and lots and lots of people would buy one.

The question is can they shave enough cost off of it (no WiFi, smaller screen, no Safari, google maps, smaller capacity) to offer it for $300 and/or $400 bucks?

No one knows for sure, but I bet Apple wants to compete for more consumer dollars, and a smaller iPhone with less features at a lower price point would do that wonderfully.

will apple have to file something with the fcc if they're simply updating memory?
 
Yeah I see a new phone in this period. Its really needed for the European market - and Asia - where 2G is well on the way out.

Smart money would see it out a good while before Christmas. We may want to watch the European FCC equivalents rather than the US.
