New Iphone > Many questions if I should JB or not

Hello everyone, I've had my Iphone 3Gs for a while and I was considering if I should JB it or not.

From what I've read, jb can really add cool features to it and make a much more awsome gadget but there may be too many disavantages in doing so.

It has never been unlocked or jb before, and is running 3.1.2 on it (no shsh saved), I've already checked and it has the newer iboot, so already know about the tethering JB.

My greatest fears are that I will mess with something, and when I have to restore I would upgrade to 3.1.3 automatically, spoiling any move from me in the future to try jb it again.

So, even if I need a pc to reboot my iphone everytime, not being able to restore my iphone at any given moment and not being able to downgrade it if something happens ... is it really worth it?

I'm also scared about my iphone getting bricked, or voiding my warranty.

Anyway, if you do recommend for me to jb it, I can't understand the difference from redsnow to blackrain. Their main purpose is to install cydia right, so which of them should I use?

Last thing, is there any faq for common problems with answers on how to deal with them without restoring the iphone.

With all those concerns, why are you even asking us. Sounds like you have convinced yourself not to jailbreak.

if you can't figure out the answer to all the questions you asked yourself please don't jailbreak! Sorry we are going crazy with people that can't do research themselves. you don't know who the heck we are why would you even trust us to answer your questions. Sorry when I jailbroke my phone it was very easy to find all the info I needed google and youtube have tons of stuff! if that's too difficult please don't jailbreak! sorry if I seem rude but if you look on this page alone you will see several threads!

you can always go back to normal mode with a restore so you really have nothing to loose you should try it and if you don't like it just do a restore and don't use your backup

If I understand right, if I were to restore my iphone I would have to restore to 3.1.3 (as apple is not signing anymore for 3.1.2), disabling any further attempt to jb it, right?
Or is there another way to restore without upgrading it to 3.1.3?

I just want to know if you think that jb is worthwhile even with all its drawbacks.

You can make iTunes restore with 3.1.2 Don't know the key combination for Windows off the top of my head but it'll be mentioned in some iClarified tutorial or other.

my two pennies:
is it worth it? a resounding YES! even tethered, still, YES!
does it come with risks? YES, and some of those risks are heavy; no risk, no reward. but many of them can be mitigated by doing a LOT of research first. spend a few days reading and watching tutorials, and read random threads on boards like this. random threads on random topics are a little gold mine of knowledge that most overlook untill they run into a problem. it can seem overwhelming -- you dont know what you need to know untill you are confronted with the need to know it... and dispite the rhetoric, the people on these forums are very helpful and quite knowledgeable. its not rocket science, but its no peice of cake either; i've asked my share of questions... i think it is absolutely worth it! just tread with caution, dont get carried away, dont add "shady" repos (like i did) as they and thier apps CAN really mess with your phone!! and once well armed with sufficient knowhow, use blackra1n, it is the simplest method for JBing. good luck!

Much of what I'm about to say has already been said, but I'm going to try to summarize it for you.

There's no reason not to jailbreak it. Yes, it'll be tethered, which you're already aware of. I've had my 3GS jailbroken since blackra1n was released and I've had zero issues. The only time I need to reboot is... well, never. The springboard restarts occasionally with some add-ons but actually rebooting the device has never been necessary.

If you do happen to do something that jacks your phone, you get to restore it to 3.1.3. Oh well. You're back where you started. And nobody here can say for sure that somebody won't release a jailbreak for it in the future so assuming your chances of jailbreaking in the future are shot is pointless.

So really, there's a ton of cool features and NO disadvantages. Read up on the process, ask the necessary questions and go for it!

since you are unsure, and a healthy dose of fear is allays a good thing, search google for "top cydia apps", and same thing plus 2008, 09, 10... etc. get familiar with WHY your taking the risks. are you interested in "pimping out", iyour phone (lol i hate that term) with themes, or are you more interested in added functionality. there is plenty of both, but it would be a good idea to research the things you want to get out of the JB so that you dont take on unnecessary risks or find yourself disappointed with the effort put in. for example, SBsettings, categories, proswitcher, are just the tip of the iceberg, but theses are some of my top reasons for jailbreaking. curiosity alone, however, should not be the sole motivating factor. that is, you should not just know what you are getting yourself into, you really should know why.

Im really curious as to what the downside and horrible stuff that can happen to ones Iphone when JB?!? I have never heard of one bricked Iphone after a JB, all these pople act like its rocket science or there might be something bad that will happen..."will my iphone blow up if i dont JB right..."...lol Just try it, if you dont like it go back to restore, BUT PLEASE just read a couple of NUMEROUS threads on this, so sick of the same thread being posted 70000000 times. That is not true! I have a 3GS with 3.1.2 FW and somehow mine got stuck at the apple logo. I thought I was doomed and will have to force restore to 3.1.3 but I somehow found a way to restore it back to 3.1.2.

I searched here but found youtube is better search coz it has instructional videos. Look for a username iDeviceTutz in youtube and search his shsh downgrading videos. Now, I have a mac but Im sure you can find one for PC.

Well, thank you very much for taking my questions in consideration, and I will jb my iphone for sure.

But now I have a different question: when I jb it, tethered boot will be a fact.
If a exploit to boot the iphone regularly is released, I wouldn't be able to access it, right? (to change JBs you need to restore, and if I restore I get 3.1.3 meaning no jb in the close future).
Is it advisable to jb my iphone now or w8 for a exploit to be found?
