New iPhone owner with some questions.

Hi, I just bought an 8GB iPhone off a friend, and I've got some questions.

Here's a brief hisotry of his iPhone:
Bought in LA Apple store in October 2007, unlocked and jailbroken to version 1.1.2 (3B48b) done with Windows. The phone has SMBpref and Customize (from thespicychicken.com) and loaded with 400mb worth of applications.

Questions I have:

1. Should I re-unlock and/or re-jailbreak the iPhone to the latest firmware? If so, what application should I use? (I have MBP on OS 10.4)

2. What is the success rate of unlocking an iPhone? Can the new programs brick the iPhone?

3. I ordered InvisibleShield full body cover, will the phone fit into the charging dock after the application of the shield?

Thanks in advance, I'm new to this toy which I never thought I'd own (never did any research or follow with the iPhone news).

The InvisibleShield is .22 mm thick, so shouldn't interfere with docking at all. great choice!

1. You can update to 1.1.4 and use one of the many tools out there to unlock, activate and jailbreak again. However, you will have to manually reinstall all the lost applications.

2. Success rate is high if you follow instructions and don't skip steps. Malicious programs can harm the iPhone, but our community is on constant watch for those. I recommend you use Pwnage Tool for Mac.

I've read the sticky about Pwnage, and there's something that I don't quite understand.

My iPhone is already unlocked and jailbroken, and the method used is unknown/forgotten. My friend told me that if I "update" my iPhone with iTunes, the phone will brick (or something like that).

Pwnage requires the iPhone to have firmware 1.1.4 before PwnageTool can iPwn it. So does that mean I have to restore the phone to factory default setting using iTunes?

wouldn't that brick the phone? My buddy said to never update the phone using iTunes... Sorry I just wanted to be 110% sure.

You should NEVER update in iTunes UNTIL you know it is safe to.

We now have 4 different methods to unlock and activate 1.1.4 so it won't "brick" your phone.

In fact "Brick" is a misnomer - the ONLY thing that bricks a phone seems to be ZiPhone! which is why you should NEVER use it!

No other method does damage that is not reversible.

Just restore to 1.1.4 in iTunes and follow the pwnage FAQ steps.

now you got me all scared . i jailbroke last night only for apps with ziphone. i read this and am now restoring, should i be ok after restore? how does it 'brick' phones?

I'll update as soon as I re-unlock and re-jailbreak the phone. Thanks a lot. That cleared a lot of confusions.

lol you misunderstood me.

What I meant was you should not update from your existing firmware to a new firmware apple has just released until the iPhone hackers say its safe and/or they have a way around it.

Unless your on an official iPhone contract and in which case the worse that would happen is your'd relock your phone.

ie, Don't update OR restore to 2.0 when it out until the devteam have hacked it.

But as 1.1.4 has many hacks now its ok to restore or upgrade to 1.1.4.
