I have backed up my iphone with icloud, and want to download photos, email, apps, contacts, etc. to the new phone. Is there a right and wrong way to do this with a brand new iphone? Do I set it up first and then download from icloud or via itunes? Just want to make sure I get it right. I have a macbook pro so i could attach to it and itunes. I have wifi at home. It's pretty fast.

This is replacing an 8 plus. I am wanting to try lighter, smaller. An experiment. I really liked the 8+ but size, weight, a bit much. And these days i'm not texting a lot so the smaller size should be good.

Thanks for any help.

Want to thank MacRumors for their page on stolen phones, what to do when it happens, keeping my info safe. The warnings about phishing by the thieves was right on the money. I locked the phone via an old iphone SE i have from home as soon as I returned and they can't get in. I am thinking to erase it as well once I have reported everything to the police, tomorrow. I have a location to give them. Find My app from apple located it. What a learning experience. Expensive. Nerve-racking.

The police report also necessary to try and have homeowners insurance kick in some funds. Also, the police will use the imei number to make the phone unusable throughout france, where I currently live. I'm honestly not expecting the police to try and find it, but you never know.

During the setup process, you'll be prompted to set it up using the most recent iCloud backup. You can do it all via wifi and you don't need to use iTunes.

It's awful that you had to go through this, and I bet what you learned will help others too. Good luck with the new phone and I hope everything goes smoothly for you.

ok, thanks for this Namara...

I recently got the new iPhone SE and was a bit apprehensive about migrating everything from my old iPhone (1st generation SE) across. However, with the new-ish iPhone to iPhone Data Migration it could not have been any easier. I don't use iCloud but everything - all my contacts, photos, apps etc - all migrated across to my new phone. If I can work it out, I think anyone will be able to! :)

You were right. It wasn't complicated. All done. Easy peasy. Thanks.
