Should we expect a minor iPhone update before June, like when the 3G became the 3GS, or will June be the next and major generation of the iPhone.

A couple of things:
3G -> 3GS was a pretty large update, just not cosmetically
The only real minor update to the iPhone occurred when they added 16GB to the original and dropped the price
But no, it's not going to happen.

Check this thread.

Yeah 3G -> 3GS was just a minor update

Lay off the crack, chief...

How does this keep happening...

yeah it's pretty annoying but i guess that's the format of the forum

I would not expect a 64gb iphone or a new iphone for a while

the biggest reason we didn't see a 32gb iphone 3g is because the iPhone only has room for a single NAND flash chip ( currently the highest density available)

So i don't expect a 64 gb iPhone ( 128gb ipod) before intel/samsung/toshiba annonunces that they have manufactured a 64gb nand chip

I expect next june/july = next iphone

The best thing about new iPhones is the keynote. Everyone is all antsy and on the edge of their seat. MR blows up on the day of a keynote. So much fun.

OP: It would be cool, but I doubt we'll see anything before June '10, but I think June '10 will bring big things. I hope.

I don't know what you guys are talking about? Here is your brand new, updated iPhone:

To be perfectly honest we’re surprised it took this long. Reports are surfacing that Apple is now shipping a new bootrom with the iPhone 3GS that is resistant to the 24kpwn exploit used by the Dev-Team and others to jailbreak the iPhone. DevTeam member MuscleNerd confirms that the bootrom update, dubbed iBoot-359.3.2, would make jailbreaking new iPhone’s “impossible” for the time being. Man, does Apple hate when people muck with the iPhone or what! Your move Dev Team — and godspeed. Or maybe our ninja GeoHot can find a way around it? We’ll see!

Let's just say there are no such thing as early upgrades? June is the only time when new iPhones are announced. No dates earlier than that.

every iphone update has been a significant one in their own ways...
2nd gen (3g) got, well, 3g, and a new look, and other spec bumps.
the 3rd gen (3gs) kept the same look (important in my opinion when it comes to marketing and compatibility) and the under-the-hood specs were drastically bumped up.

The fourth generation i think we will see a decent update... the usual newer cpu with higher clock speed, maybe a better gpu... i think we will definitely see a higher resolution (around 800x480), more software features (multitasking apps), maybe even a 5mp camera.
