I'm pretty sure I will be getting an iPhone for Christmas. I'm already an AT&T user and I was just hoping to unlock the phone so that I can put it in my current sim and use it without adding the $20 to my plan. Is that possible?

So when I cancel the data plan, I will be charged for data use. But I can turn on EDGE lock so that it won't get on EDGE or charge me for data, and I can still use the iPhone and get online with wi-fi.Unlock your iPhone not possible with 1.1.2 OTB. You will have to renew your 2 year service agreement plus pay the $20.00 to AT&T for EDGE data. However, after a month you can eliminate via online AT&T the $20.00 EDGE data plan

Wrong.
Software jailbreak and activation to use with existing AT&T SIM card, no additional contract, is possible. To use with any other carriers you have to get a sim card solution.
OK, a second here.
To get things clear:
If you buy a new iPhone and it comes with 1.1.2 OUT OF THE BOX, that means you'll get the new bootloader and that a TRUE unlock is not possible. (True unlock being using anySim).
You CAN activate and jailbreak it, but not use it as a phone.
There is also the simproxy solutions, which are technically NOT an unlock, but will work for some time.
I'm not looking for a true unlock. I just want to use my existing AT&T sim without needing to pay for the data plan.
Then you can. Jailbreak and activate and change whatever you want.
