I'm pretty sure I will be getting an iPhone for Christmas. I'm already an AT&T user and I was just hoping to unlock the phone so that I can put it in my current sim and use it without adding the $20 to my plan. Is that possible?

Unlock your iPhone not possible with 1.1.2 OTB. You will have to renew your 2 year service agreement plus pay the $20.00 to AT&T for EDGE data. However, after a month you can eliminate via online AT&T the $20.00 EDGE data plan

So when I cancel the data plan, I will be charged for data use. But I can turn on EDGE lock so that it won't get on EDGE or charge me for data, and I can still use the iPhone and get online with wi-fi.

'Unlocking' is possible on 1.1.2 iPhone

Hi!

Of course you can 'unlock' your iPhone and use almost any SIM you want.

Just get one of the SIM solutions on sale at eBay and many other such sites.

The sellers are using many different names, but the best (most elegant) solutions are the TurboSIM (genuine only from Bladox), the Stealth SIM, and the many variations of the HyperCard SIM (aka Hyper-Card SIM).

Just watch out for, and don't buy, the Dual SIM (also sold under many other names, including the first two I recommended) which requires you to drastically cut your SIMs - I also heard that it does not work with the latest SIMs.

Wrong.

Software jailbreak and activation to use with existing AT&T SIM card, no additional contract, is possible. To use with any other carriers you have to get a sim card solution.

Oh really? So I just need to jailbreak it?

OK, a second here.

To get things clear:

If you buy a new iPhone and it comes with 1.1.2 OUT OF THE BOX, that means you'll get the new bootloader and that a TRUE unlock is not possible. (True unlock being using anySim).

You CAN activate and jailbreak it, but not use it as a phone.

There is also the simproxy solutions, which are technically NOT an unlock, but will work for some time.

I'm not looking for a true unlock. I just want to use my existing AT&T sim without needing to pay for the data plan.
