I have just purchased a brand new iPhone and I would like to unlock it and use it with T-Mobile. I have been doing some reading on unlocking but since I have not hooked it up to itunes yet to activate it how am I supposed to find out what version I am running? I know I need to get it to at least 1.1.1. Since I just bought it today I am assuming it might be 1.1.2. Any suggestions on what I should use and how to unlock this iphone?

Thanks in advance,

Mike

It is probably 1.1.2. You can figure it out from the serial number printed on the back of the box:

A typical iPhone will have a serial number in the following format: 7T727XYZWH8

The serial number is made up of several blocks which have its own meaning, as explain below:

Digits 1 to 3 (7T7) = Year / Batch code
Digits 4 to 5 (27) = Week of manufacture
Digits 6 to 8 (XZY) = Unique identifier part of the S/N
Digits 9 to 11 (WH8) = 8Gb model

From http://www.unlockediphones.de/modules/smartfaq/faq.php?faqid=22

If the week is > 44, then you definitely have a 1.1.2 iPhone.

Regarding the unlock, a coworker of mine unlocked his using TurboSIM, which is a chip that you add to your SIM. I can assure you that it works, but it requires you to cut out a portion of your SIM card and follow a process to program TurboSIM, so, from his experience, it seems that it is not for the faint of heart. You can see a video here, plus there are other tons of videos showing the unlock process.

Regarding TurboSIM itself, he ordered it from some site in eastern Europe for about 50 euros. Prices in eBay are currently around $200: http://search.ebay.com/search/search.dll?from=R40&_trksid=m37&satitle=turbosim&category0=

49.

So the only way I can unlock it right now is to purchase TurboSIM? Too bad is cost as much as it does. That is crazy! So I guess I can either switch to AT&T and then just jailbreak my iphone or take it back and pay the restocking fee. Well I appreciate your help.
