New iPhoto user - need help

OK, I bought my first Mac ever yesterday. Let me just say, I LOVE IT!!

I transfered about 300 photos from my PC to the Mac, and a lot of them have weird survivor faces or country flags on them now. I registered the Mac, so I'm not sure why it's doing this! I have the photos set as my screen savor, and I'd much prefer to see my daughters face than some ancient warrior mask!

Ideas?

WHAT?

You mean, the flags are inside your pictures? I'm confused.

You must have somehow, imported iChat icons into your iPhoto Library. If you go to the Pictures folder, you'll see the iPhoto Library, inside there is a iChat Icons folder. Look through those and see if those are the pictures you're seeing.

I would suggest re importing.

When you brought them over how did you do it?

I put them on a USB thumb drive, then copied them to my "pictures" directory. I then imported them into iPhoto. The "flags" look like overlays, and they change from picture to picture. It's almost like it's an eval version, and they've put something on the extra pictures to keep me from printing/editing them.

I don't know how to do a print scren on the Mac, or I'd attach one.

Kay, that is just weird. Can you be more specific on how your transferred them over, what type of pictures, they were, etc.? Posting a couple screenshots might help as well...

The strange thing is, when I use the photos as a screen saver, I can see the "flags" and then can see the rest of the photo on the edges, so I know it's superimposed on the image.

bizarre indeed. do you still have your pictures on your PC to try transfering again maybe?

also, what method did you use to import them? and how did you transfer them - burned CD, network, etc.?

Yes, I still have the orginals. I copied them to a USB thumb drive from my PC, and then mounted that on the Mac, and copied the folders to the pictures directory in Finder. I then launced iPhoto, and drug and dropped the folders from my pictures directory to the left pane in iPhoto. It previewed them as they imported, and I can view them all in iPhoto. It's only when they are used in the screensaver that the masks, flags, shoes, etc... get put on top of the photo.

so if those aren't in your library where did that screenshot come from?

in the screensaver pane have you selected Pictures Folder or the name of an iPhoto library/album?

I never seen anything like that before...can or did you try to move your pictures over using a cd? Hope someone has an answer or two

Umm...those are some of the iChat buddy icons and some other random images that come with Mac OS X Tiger. If you Spotlight some common words like "Chinese" or "flag" you'll find those images too. It looks like you added the Library folder images and other OS ones to iPhoto.

Yes, they are part of the library, and I understand why they would show up on the screen saver. What I don't understand is why they would show up ON TOP of an existing picture.

For example, I have an action picture of my daughter's soccer team. You can see legs, the sidelines, the field, etc... on the 4 corners, but the center of the picture is a pair of Chinese sandals. I could understand just the sandals with black corners (since the picture is round), but I don't understand why it's essentially blacking out/hiding an existing picture.

I guess I'll delete all the pictures and the ones that come with X, and then re-import just what I want in the screen saver.

He's right. What I would do is just delete the library and re-import them. But this time you make sure you select the pics from the USB drive and not the entire Pictures folder.

The Pictures folder includes a folder with icons that can be used for iChat icons. Since you presumably added the whole Pictures folder, those pics got added as well.
