Apple needs a new iPod to invigorate the product.
Logically the next phase would be a "sport" product.
Sorry for the cheap mockup.

What would the point of a Wi Fi connection be? They can't exactly integrate the iPod touch apps (Safari, Mail, etc) onto the nano, especially if they stick to a design like how we've seen. The only thing I can even think of is wireless syncing, and personally I don't think that is enough to warrant making the device Wi Fi compatible...

just trying to suggest it might be coming down the line---there has been talk lately about the iPod being a dying product. I think not---there will always be a market for music-on-the-go. I do think that Apple will probably move towards a product that is built into cars--probably will include iPod capability, GPS navigation, and Bluetooth connectivity to iPhone---perhaps even stream video to a backseat monitor for the kids.

The iPod will not die, it just needs to progress. We're already seeing Apple backtrack in product design (from fat nano to slim form again). They will have to innovate even further next year to entice people to buy under poor financial conditions. My guess is that radio/SiriusXM integration will be a must from this point forward.

Having a device that people can take to their workout that actually is more than just music would be killer. Being able to download workout data into a home computer, access from the web, share with trainers, etc. would be a niche market but definitely a popular device. Making it waterproof would be awesome.

WiFi will enable "talking" between gym equipment and the iPod, as well as wireless syncing (which I think will become a standard across the board soon). I agree email and Safari will not be useful on a device this small, but there are other uses for WiFI integration.
