I heard they are discontinuing the Shuffle. Is this true? I really want one but I'm waiting for the refresh to get 8-12 GB...

There has been a ton of rumors of Apple discontinuing the shuffle along with the classic. I still don't think Apple will. I'm pretty sure they will have to do something with it. An added screen? Refreshed Colors? Who knows.

3cm *3cm touch screen to view album art, flip through songs, ipod shuffle with shake to shuffle, accelerometer, and a side volume controls like the current ipod touch. And just note this will be a VERy stripped down iOS with just the music-no apps, safari, itunes store-It will be a very simplified iOS.

Will post pics/video soon

3cm? That whole idea just sounds pointless. I wouldn't buy it.

Me neither. As long as there's 2G shuffles available at ebay, I'm fine. But the idea does sound very apple. I say possible.

Edit: And btw I consider the entire lineup of iPods except the shuffle (and maybe the classic) pointless, long term - theoretically there is no advantage over Phones with Music Player. But people buy them like crazy as long as they sparkle.

I don't think that the new iPod nano will have that 1.7" tiny touch screen that leaked out last month, I don't see Apple making the nano that much smaller. However, it could be used for the new shuffle, which I also doubt. I still think they will you the touch screen as a click wheel replacement for the upcoming iPod nano, or a screen for the rumored Apple TV.

Pointless other than the fact that you don't have to pay for a two year contract on an ipod, which for a big piece of the ipod population (those under the age of 18) is a barrier to entry. Additionally, I don't want to carry around my phone to when I go for a run.
Mobile access to the net, even by wifi, is a plus as well.

Finally, I know other, smaller phones can play music, but then you lose the simplicity of the itunes interface.

Far far from pointless I would say.

A touch screen click wheel would be superpointless. ;)

With Apple releasing all these multi touch devices hence the Magic Mouse and Magic Trackpad, along with the multi touch trackpads on all of the MacBooks, I would guess it would get it some day.

Do you guys think that they'd cut the classic and shuffle and just call the iPod touch "iPod" and make the nano a mini iPod Touch?

Mind the words "theoretically" and "long term"... I know there's marketing reasons for their existence - now.

But you do want to carry around your iPod touch or nano while running? Which are just as big as a large (i)phone or a 'usual' phone?

There's also too few open w-lan spots in most areas to really call it mobile access.

Finally, I know other, smaller phones can play music, but then you lose the simplicity of the itunes interface.

Again, theoretically and (hopefully) long term that argument is moot when either other manufacturers catch up with Apple's interface or Apple finally issues a smaller iPhone.

Far far from pointless I would say.

Not so far away... could be sooner rather than later.

Definitely possible. Apple has proven many times in the past that they're capable of even the most dimwitted decisions - and get away with it... ;)

I'm just looking forward to the day, when - after the touch-hype has settled - Apple brings back devices with real mechanic buttons. That'll be magic... :p

The click wheel has lived for quite some time now, since about 2004 I believe, it has to be sooner or later when Apple adds an innovative touch pad to control iPods.

I very much doubt that Apple would kill the Shuffle. A refresh maybe, but not a complete removal from the product line. It's still pretty popular in gyms and stuff - I love mine.

It's ancestor - the wheel - has also lived for quite some time now, since about 4000 BC I believe and it's still going strong... ;)

An extra touch screen as a click wheel replacement would be a completely useless gimmick. There's at least some sense in covering the entire nano with a touch screen, but even that would be two steps back for one step forward for my taste.

I still would love something a shuffle-size to run with. Small and cheap enough to dispose of in case it malfunctions. iPod nano is a tad expensive to break accidentally on a run.

I hope not. I adore the shuffle. I hope they do a capacity bump real soon too. Nothing else though, I actually think it was a mistake changing the design from the 2nd Gen.

Agreed. If the nano's click wheel must go, Apple might as well make the entire front surface one continuous touch screen, not two uneven screens. Until then, I will continue to enjoy controlling my nano without having to look at it (except for advanced functions).

Now, a tiny touch screen on the shuffle might actually make some sense.

I could see Apple doing that. It would put the shuffle where some people see it anyway - as a would-be touch or nano.

I really like the current shuffle and thought about getting one. I'm worried it could get discontinued or so radically changed. I may buy one once the media event is announced, knowing I have 2 weeks to return it, leave it unopened and then see what happens. Apple has a tendency to not stock the previous model once they are changed and I don't want to go by Best Buys and such trying to find one of the last remaining.

I'd love a shuffle the same size as the 3rd gen with physical buttons.

This is what I'm hoping for. I used to have one just for listening to tunes in the shower with a mini-speaker or just using in the car. Would love another Shuffle with buttons.
